rear derailler

Howdy, I have an old bike with a SIS derailler with the hanger attached. I want to upgrade beyond a shimano tourney. I was told that I cannot put another derailler on the bike unless it has the hanger attached...like the tourney. It doesn't make sense to me that I couldn't put a hanger on the bike and attach any derailler that I want. Any thoughts if this makes sense

You should be able to destroy your current hanger/setup. Buy a new hanger (quite cheap) and then attach any deraillure of your choice. The only limitations you may have is if your frame cannot 'connect' to the hanger. Depends on how old your bike is, but i think it should be fine either way....

the tourney has a slot that bolts onto the drive side dropout, and does not require a rd hanger to install. now, if your bike has a hanger, than you can go crazy, if not, then just get a new tourney.

You will need a different frame to run a modern deraileur. Check with your LBS or try to pick up a used frame. Sometimes the magizines have good deals on frames.

Maybe you can get an old derailleur, my old XT derailleur (which looks exactly the same as 2005 XTs except ir works with 7 speed) didn't need a hanger.
