Please help with best bike options

I am looking to start mountain biking and want to get a bike. I am almost 6'2" and about 175 lbs. My price range is about $600-1200. I need some suggestions for bikes that would be good choices. I will probably bike at least once a week and mostly on singletrack and trails.

Thanks!

Visit as many local bike shops as possible, talk and listen to the people that work there, ride a bunch of different bikes, and report back to us when you've got it narrowed down to three or four options.

well, there are plenty of choices. Giant Iguana, Rainier are some good ones. if its your first bike i wouldn't suggest getting anything too expensive as you may stop biking sooner than you think. Trek 6500 Disc is a pretty good choice i think. Maybe not even that. you can get a Trek 4500 Disc. Specialized hardrock seems to be pretty good from what i've heard, probably a great first real bike. but if you want to get into recreational races(if you decide you really like biking) then i would go for the 6500 disc as its probably the best for the money.
