Didn't know it would be so hard to spend $2K on a bike...

Ok so I work out a budget/deal/thingy with the wife to get a major upgrade to my bike stable. I have ridden the Stumpjumper FSR line many times and decided to get the base model 2006 Stump FSR that lists for $2000. Ok I call my not so local Specialized dealer (30 miles away) and he doesn't have that one in my size. Ok so how long will it take to get one in. Let me check... he does and the warehouse is out of 2006 Stumpy FSR base models!. So I call a bike shop about 75 miles away and they say the same thing. Hmmm, look for more dealers on Specialized website. Call two shops in the capitol of my state and 90 miles away and same story.

Finally I find a shop with two, this shop is 70 miles away. Good grief July and they are sold out!?! I have never bought a bike in the summer is this a common occurence?

Yep. Happens with most company's. They don't want to make more bikes than they can sell.

Ha! At least you found one! Try getting a last-of-the-last Kona in your size only to have it arrive a week late and so badly damaged that you can't rationalize spending that much on a pre-bashed new bike. Heck if it's going to be trashed, I want to be the one to trash it, not the delivery guys.

And then there were none..........

That happened to me too when I was looking for a top fuel. Not many shops carry them in stock and Trek said I would have to wait until September! I ended up going with a different brand. Glad you didn't have to compromise.

Eh get the Comp anyway...they should be able to sell you the Comp for like $1800-$1900.

I experienced this a couple years ago. I had my heart set on a Marin Nail Trail but all the shops I contacted said they couldn't get them anymore (this was also mid-summer). Turns out I found a heckuva deal on a barely used Pine Mountain, which had the same specs but was on a sweet steel frame, so I bought it instead. Now I'm oh-so-glad I wasn't able to buy a Nail Trail.

Ok an update Monday I will be looking and choosing between a 2006 Stumjumper FSR and a 2007 Stumpjumper FSR Comp. The Comp is 10% more. THe main differences are the Comp specs Avid Juicy 5 hydraulic Disc brakes, and a SRAM X-9 Rear der, to the base model's Shimano XT... any thoughts?

I tend to walk in open minded. With options. I also never try to buy anything in the summer big ticket. Shops are running out and manufacturers and depreciating them for future stock. If you are lucky, you are looking for an odd size (I love being tall) and they willhave them and want to get rid of them.
