New Guy Needs Help????
I can’t tell you how relived I am that I found this site. Any how as a new fellow I have a few questions. My wife and I both just purchased a couple of bikes to start taking advantage of what Alaska has to offer. However being in a remote area of Alaska I cant exactly go asking for help at my local bike shop. So here I am.
I have my bike pretty much all set up and it feels good and it is very comfortable. My wife’s bike on the other hand is a different story. It has been hard to get her bike set up properly. I think we might just about have it but not quiet there. We need to raise her handle bars up about another 1" to 1.5" but the neck on the bike is to short and wont allow me to raise it past the maximum insertion line. What do you guys recommend as to where I can purchase a longer neck? And what are your recommendations? I just need to get another 1" to 1.5" of height out of the bars. Thank you |
??? i dont know what you mean with the neck. i am pretty sure you are talking about the steerer tube but there is usually no extra steerer tube with new bikes. i think the best thing would be go to with a adjustable stem, you can get one over the internet for not that much money.
are you guys riding on singletrack trails or just recreational? |

He has a quill stem with a threaded headset. (you youngsters...this is the way they did it in the old days) Everything from the bottom of the barrell on up has a threadless headset now.
Best thing to do is measure the neck and go to your local shop and see fi they have anything. They used to make an extension for that thing at one time. I don't know if they still do. You could also put a higher rise handlebar on that puppie. |
www.jensonusa.com
www.pricepoint.com www.nashbar.com www.blueskycycling.com out of those you should be able to find a stem that suits your liking *edit*opps messed up on the jenson link |
Thank you both. That is exactly what I was after, and the response time was wonderful.

OK another question? I was able to find a quiet a number of stems that I think will work, but I am not certain. I took the stem out of the bike and it says 21.1 OD so I can assume that is the size of the stem. Most of the stems I came across say that they will fit a 1" or a 1 1/8. In doing the math if memory serves me correctly 1" converted is 25.4mm so that would leave me with a 4.3mm gap. Is it a safe bet that they make spacers as well for these.
Thanks again |
Nitto make a quill stem with an extra long extension.
Check if your headset is a 1" or a wider one such as 1 1/8" |
make sure you know what components you are dealing with first
ie: do you have a threadless or a threaded steerer tube / headset and is your stem a 1. seperate part that bolts on the steerer tube or 2. is it all one peice. if that is difficult to figure out, give us the make, year, and model of the bike or post a picture of the current setup. |
