Cane Creek Solos headset? Short or tall?

The WTB Momentum headset that came with my bike sucks. It's either too loose or too tight and doesn't allow for precise handling. So, I'm replacing it with a Cane Creek Solos. Anyone use this headset? How do you like it? What's the difference between the short and tall other than the obvious? Same bearings and such?

sorry, not yet. but i will be buying three of them in the near future for my frames i am doing. 2 pewters and 1 black to be exact.

the short and tall both come with the HS. you choose which one you use when you get it. it is just the cap that is different. plus the HS comes with i think three interlocking spacers.

Thanks. That's interesting about the different caps. Most websites I've seen want you to select either a short or tall option when ordering. I ordered mine through my LBS, so I'm hoping it will come with both. Any functional differences, or just aesthetic? I ordered a pewter as well. It's going to look sweet.

hmmm. maybe it is a little known secret?? the CC web site says you get both and i have seen it at different online places as you have said (either or) and i have seen it advertised as both as well. if mine comes without both i will send it back.

make sure you get the spacers too.

i think it is mostly to adjust stem height rather than using spacers. so yeah it's kind of aesthetics. just a heads up, you might want to cut your steerer tube in such a way that you will be able to use either the short or tall so you can change it in the future for a new look if you want to. i am sure if you take some measurements and are creative with the "regular" spacers this should be relatively easy. this is what i plan to do.

hey, if you remember can you post a follow up message hear saying if you got both short and tall and interloc spacers?

-thanks

my bad

maybe it wasn't on their site. i might have found out via email when i asked them.

here is the email exchange...short and sweet:

me:

does the Solos HS come with both the short and tall upper cap? i thought they were 2 different products, but then i found a vendor who advertised the Solos as coming with both and then you choose at home which way you wanted to run it.

please clarify...thanks

Take care,

Brian

CC:

All Solo headsets IS or regular, come with both tall and short covers.

Malcolm

I'll let you know how mine comes. It'll hopefully be here by next Friday or so. I don't know whether it comes with the spacers or not. I have 3-4 carbon spacers that came with my bike, so I was just planning on using them. Do the interlock spacers offer smoother turning?

The headset came in today. It came with both caps and two interlocking spacers. I think I'll stick with my CF spacers, though, as I like the look. Unfortunately, the headset was not pewter as I had ordered. Either the shop manager didn't get the memo or Cane Creek was out of stock. I'll find out what happened, but it's hard to complain too much since I'm technically an employee. That pewter would have looked so bling on my steel bike. Black will have to do. Gotta get the headset straightened out before the Berryman this weekend. Ever ride it?

Yeah, it was directed towards you. Figured you'd ridden it since you're from MO. It's 24 miles and Missouri's only IMBA Epic trail. It will probably kick my ass, but we'll see. Definitely post some pics once you get your pewter headset.

It's between Steelville and Potosi in the canoe mecca of MO. Nice trail from what I remember from hiking it years back. I guess it's probably 4 hours from Kirksville. I rode Landahl last weekend outside of KC. If you haven't ridden those, they're a must do. Beats the Chubb here in St. Louis pretty handily which is hard to do. If you ever want to get together a MO group ride, just say the word.
