I have Avid mechanicals on my rigid singlespeed, and they stop so well my eyeballs feel like they are coming out of socket whenever I grab the levers.

Plus, Juicys need more maintainence. I agree that the name and look is cooler, but I decided to put that extra $$ into bust resistant gear. I rather ride than impress with a spec list.

You're absolutely incorrect.

So because you, with your extremely limited MTB experience, haven't seen them on a XC bike, they aren't used?

FWIW, I started using HS-33s on XC bikes when you were still wetting your bed at four years old. And I was a late adopter.

With 2 sets of the juicy's they have been the same. I haven't had to touch them, unless I move them to a newer bike.

I'm not saying NOBODY uses them, just not many people. I, personally, have never seen anyone use them for XC, not saying that some people don't. Just not many people. I myself don't even know where to buy them...

"lol People only use magura hs-33's for trials"

Perhaps "only" has a different meaning on your planet.

Here's how:

Find someone that has access to this wild new thing called "the internet"
Find someone who can type
Find someone who can type "google.com" into this nifty thing known as a "web browser"
Find someone who can type "magura hs33" into that wacky google thing.

Voila!

I guess Avid Jucy pwns the hydralics my buddy uses. They need regular (expensive) adjustments. I forget the name he uses. Magura?

I'm coming from a fixed, so I barely use my brakes, anyway. Avid mechanicals so far stop me like a wall when I'm cresting a huge drop . Awesome modulation, too.

Some of the more obscure hydros do require more setup and work. But I really haven't had maintenance issues with hayes or avid.

My hydraulic Magura brakes don't require any more attention than my Hayes...which is none.

Thats the main difference for me. Not that recently, but recently enough I upgraded from a Kooka Mech front and a Hayes Mech rear to Diatech Hydro's front and back and the difference is noticable. I never had a problem with the mech discs, but the stopping power (and more importantly, the modulation) I have now means I won't swap back.

My Lbs told me that the only difference between bb5 and bb7 is an easy adjustment knob and the only difference between mechanical and hydrolic is you dont have to adjust hydros, I have ridden about 10 different bikes extensivly and I think that they are right. I ordered the bb's for my rockhopper cause the hydros just didnt make up the difference in price for me. I want to ride my bike not look at it hanging on the wall in pieces. I say if you can afford it then do it

Well if you do get them, then you will need a bigger chain ring.

What does a chainring have to do with putting disc brakes on....

i have hydros on my Kona and i think that they do have amazing stopping power but i also think they are a pain in the ass...between the disc rubbing due to caliper movment due to crashes or disc warping or the the break lines needing to be bled or nearly cutting off the end of my thumb becuase the discs are like razor blades i would have been more then happy with regular brakes...

Were you using the rotors to trim your nails again?

I love the hydros for the stopping power as well, but like Spearce said, they can be a hassle. But I'd rather have it be a hassle and stop than not be a hassle and not be able to have that control.

looking at this from a financial point of view, if your mechanicals work well for you, why replace them? In my experience - paying for the repairs - Hydros sometimes get touchy if you put your bike upside down. If you need to replace the lines, bleeding the lines can be a pain. One of my kids run hydro, the other mech - they can both stop, but the hydro seems to be more problematic.
