How good is heavy steel on downhills?

I've been cranking away on my Gary Fisher Mamba for the past few months. Great climbing bike despite the weight (about 35lbs with all the stuff on it!), and it's definitely a steel bike.

I used to ride an aluminum bike, which was a LOT lighter, but I wasn't as strong a biker back then. I think I'm noticing that the heavy weight of the bike seems to absorb lots of the downhill bumps without my effort. I'm wondering if it's the bike weight, or the steel, or both.

I'll probably upgrade later down the road (not anytime soon) and get a light hardtail, but really like the stability I'm getting with steel. Anyone else have any opinions/experiences?

Keep the steel beast, buy an aluminum hardtail. Best of both worlds. =)

Steel is more forgiving when hitting lots'a'bumps. It flexes a bit more whereas aluminum is super rigid.
