Bunnyhop VS. J-hop, WTF?

Okay, So I come from a MTB background (grew up riding Rossland BC in the 90s), and now ride street BMX.

In the BMX world, we bunny hop.
This is done by first lifting the front end of the bike, then thrusting forwards and tucking the rear end up.

This is demonstrated in Jim Boswell's great how to article:
https://www.bmxbasics.org/new/bmx0703.html

Recently I started hearing the term 'J-hop' coming from mountain bikers.
I was under the impression that a J-hop and a bunnyhop were in fact, the same thing.

But whats this? An article in Bicycling is trying to tell me different:
https://www.bicycling.com/article/0,6...1313-1,00.html

They're calling a FUNNY HOP (both wheels at the same time) a bunny hop, and they're calling a bunny hop a J hop.

So what gives?
What is your definition of bunny hopping?

I have always considered a bunny hop to pretty much be both wheels at the same time with the front wheel leading slightly. Thats what everyone I knew called it when I was into bmx back in the early 80's. I've never heard the term "funny hop".

I just call it a hop - regardless of mechanics, you either get high enough or you don't.

Works for me. I notice on the first half of most rides I generally get right over obstacles by hopping them. Once I get more tired my rear wheel seems to always catch the bigger logs and roots. Luckily though, if the front wheel clears the rear wheel generally follows.

I think the term 'funny hop' may be a regional coloquialism.
As in, its 'funny' because you're doing it wrong.
You can only get so far hopping the whole bike at once (unless you've got clipless pedals), eventually, if you want to hop higher than a foot, you will need to learn to leverage the bike, a la Bunny hopping.

That's my specialty. I'm planning on having the entire process patented.

On platforms the front wheel comes up first. Clipped in I sometimes just pull the bike straight up, especially for smaller obstacles at higher speeds.

I'm not sure more terminology is what we really need here.

Great, I'm sure they will sue for using it without their permission then. Be watching for my bankruptcy post coming in the near future.

I think j-hop might be the all-mountain term. Bunny hop is more of a agressive-xc thing.

Wow that makes no sense! What about just jumping up/over/on to something?

My friends say a J-hop is where you bring up the front first, and a bunny hop is both wheels at the same time. But I just say hop

I've become a big user of the alternate hop! Pull the front really high placing it slighty over the top and try to high center the bike "sticking" the large chainring firmly into said obstacle so as to hold the bike and rider in an upright position! "this is a great time for a hit or two of the water bottle and maybe a power gel" The finishing move is made by the next two riders who usually will hoist the back of the bike over for you!

i prefer the bronco hop where you hit whatever object you were trying to hop, and are then bucked clear over the front end into the brush, with your bike hopping down the hill after you.

unfortunately, there are not enough rodeo clowns out in the wilderness to distract the bike long enough for you to get out of its path.

So that's what you call it. I knew I could do tricks...

Best way to get extra height when hopping up an object is to let the front wheel hit it a little. Both these words mean the same thing. Hopping both wheels at a time is just plain hopping.
