can you freeride

Still kicking.
Yes, there are people that use hardtails as freeride bikes.

Go to www.nsmb.com and ask there...yes there is MUCH ht pride on the shore. In fact try and find some movies called NSX there is 6 of them now. Ht's work great on the shore. Its more about skill and balls than the bike

not the BEST example of a freeride hardtail if you are talking about riding the shore. Its looks to be more of an urban bike in my opinion.

Anyone else find it funny that most pro downhillers have been hitting big stuff for years that the so called "Freeriders" have just now started hitting?
Just thought it curious.

Give me a break dude! If freeriding is considered dropping off cliffs and riding steep downhill terrain, sure.
The whole north-shore scene is just a PART of freeriding. There's more to it than just riding skinnies.

Your right there is no pure definition of freeriding but there are still some things that apply to freeriding imo.

Not to mention one of the biggest differences...dhillers run a very groomed a flowy course. Very difficult but the lines are 'generally' set in stone. Freeriding the runs have many lines and many difficulties as well as 'usually' aren't as groomed or even groomed at all. Sometimes there is no flow to the course as well. Even on the shore where courses have been made are still left very rough in order to slow the riders down and make things far more technical than fast (except for air supply which is essentially many jumps in a row )

I look at freeriding like this, unlike dh you have to pedal to the top unless you are in a freeride competition. Then as you descend, you look for the biggest and sickest line and hit it with as much style as you can. It may take you 4 min to get down or 40 min to get down the hill. To some freeriding is hopping some small logs or steeps and to others it is hucking off some 30' cliff somewhere.
A great freerider does not mean they are good at DH and vise versa. Getting down a hill as fast as possible, although it may require SOME freeride skills, is alot different. You want the smoothest line and try to keep your wheels on the ground.
I ride both and when I am totally dh'ing my lines are calculated and percise(sp?). I will enter a turn at a predetermined point and exit at a pre-determined point. If there is a gap or double, I will hit it at the exact point every time as to minimize the amount of time I am in the air.
When I am out freeriding, my lines my change half way through a turn or atop a bolder or cliff and nothing is planned or thought out except where I will land if I drop off some thing. If I do a doulbe or gap I try and get as much air as possible, try for a no-footer or some type of airial move.
All in all, freeriding has been around since MTB's. Only now they have created a name for what most of us have been doing since we were kids. Back then we were just "Crazy kids". Now we are "Freeriders". Oh boy!!! We have a title!!!

By the way, to answer the original question, YES. You can use a ht for freeriding. I am actually building a ht/ss for just that.
