Looking around
I'm considering buying an actual bike (I have a dept store one now) because I want to be able to do more than I can now. I'm a student, so I don't have a lot of $$$, but since I moved from Ohio, I've been considering buying something I can actually use seriously here. Anyways, I figured that used is probably the best way to go for me, since it's cheaper 
I haven't decided which brand or model or whatever, but I've been looking at some, and this one seems like a pretty good deal. It's listed at $300.

17" A1 Premium Aluminum frame
RST suspension fork

Get a road bike...you're too skinny for mountain biking.

If you stretch your budget only slightly, you could get a new Hardrock. Unless you really like the fenders on the used one.

I wouldn't suggest something with disc brakes, as anything under 700$ won't have good ones anyway. You're better off with v-brakes at your price range.

Still thinking about stuff...but I have quick question. What would be better...a hardrock or a rockhopper?

I would have to say that you're a little tall for a 17" frame too.

I would say that $300 is a little steep for that particular bike. I just helped my friend buy a Trek 8000 with XT rear der, rohloff wheels, and a crappy judy fork for $350.
Keep looking. You're right in that weird size area. 17" could be okay if you do alot of technical riding. Keep your eyes peeled for an 18".
I'm 6'2" and comfy aboard a 19".
