Avid Hydraulic Disc Brakes
 
Avid has always made the best mechanical disc brakes on the market. The BB7. The easily setup and adjustment price, etc. Couple years ago (well more then a couple but not too long ago), Avid came out with Hydraulic Disk brakes. After using BB7 for a while myself and based on review, Avid was always perfect. So I have to go try out Avid Hydraulics. I started off with the Juicy 7. Put it on the front on a dirt jumper and moded the rotor (Hope 2 pcs floating roter at 180mm). The power is great. I also like their red knob where you can adjust the pads and the little hex screw to adjust the lever position. The Juicy five does not offer that so I never went for it. Then the Carbon 7 came out. No big deal and differences from the Juicy 7 besides carbon lever and lighter weight. So I didn't bother.

Now Avid comes out with Juicy Ultimate and CODE.

This is what is confusing me. Juicy 5 & 7 is for XC and AM.
The Juicy Carbon which is the same as Juicy 7 but just carbon there for lighter is for Cross Country, All Mountain, Freeride, and Downhill. Where did the Freeride and Downhill came frame?

Q: Is Juicy Seven and Juicy Carbon the same other then carbon vs. non carbon?


Then comes the Juicy Ultimate which is for XC only. Not even AM. I guess its because of its light weight. Its the lightest out of all five.

Then comes the CODE which is a different story because it has Four pistons design for FR and DH. Just like the Magura Gustav's, Hope M4, Shimano M755, etc.

My point is Avid used to be the simplest brand on disc brakes and now they are making it a bit too complicated.

Don't worry so much. If the ones you have now work, then use them 'till they break - then worry about it. Stopping power doesn't increase or decrease a significant amount between brands, only in the number of pistons, surface area, and rotor size. Of which there are many different types... but that's even more confusing. Just ride.

Plenty of people have them. However, since Grimeca dropped their US distribution in 2005, they are not available through normal channels.

Does your german hookup have the inside track on Brembos too?

brembo brakes on a mountain bike?! Thats awesome. Where can I buy some? When I was into mustangs, I had brembos on the front and rear. That car could stop on a dime. It was amazing.

I want to change over to avid juicy 7's soon. The mechanicals work fine but I'm lazy and dont want to keep adjusting them. :)

Hi, its not like I want to change anything thing but just want to share to everyone about history of Avid and their products now. I tried Grimeca before...the 8 I think...4 pistons....its ok but I rather have Hope M4. Grimeca is rough....performances is ok but not the best. Brembo...I never new they make brakes for bicycle. I thought they only do cars and racing as I have them on a WRX STi

Interesting aside note: RST OEMs Brembo disc brakes (not sure if car, M/C or both). Your Suby might be RST-equipped :)

I remember when I upgraded my stock Shimano brakes to Avids back in the 90's - I think they were arches. Man, that was the best upgrade I ever did, I've always had a soft spot for Avid.

Yesterday I rode my new bike, the first full suspension bike I've riden. Everything was different, still sorting things out. But I loved the Juicy 5's on the bike, seems like Avid is still doing the right thing.

Nice to hear from another Avid brake + person.

Avid Arches are ok now but very good for an old bike.

Does anyone have "avid supreme" experances? Or plan on selling them? I want them!

I agree w/ Elton, if they ain't broke, don't fix them...
I run a set of MX2 (Hayes) which are supposedly crap, but I don't have an issue with them at all. They stop me very well w/ 8"rotors F&R, and I won't replace them until something wears out...

It all boils down to whether you wanna L@@K cool or ride your bike...

Be careful about selling the Juicy 5's short. I have 7's on my full suspension bike and 5's on my hardtail and the 5's work every bit as well as the 7's. Sure you can't adjust the pads but they're just as powerful and if you're on a budget (gasp!) they're a good deal.

Here in the US, its Avid, Shimano, and Hayes that parts are redily available. I've never heard of Brembos or Grimeca, much less have seen parts for them. I don't know how any of the mentioned brake companies compare (except I've never heard any major gripes), but I'd buy Avid or Shimano because all the local shops here stock stuff for them.

Call me dumb, but arn't disc brakes, disc brakes, assuming they are properly adjusted, and you can use them to slow/stop your bike well? Of course there are improvements, but they seem on a relatively small scale, like better adjustability, a few percent weight shaved off some part, or something along those lines.

that's not true at all. i had a pair of hayes mechs that came stock on my fluid and sure, they'd slow me down, but they couldn't stop me ... especially when i needed them to. i didn't feel safe with them at all.

my options were avid mechs or hayes hydros and i went for the hayes hydros so i wouldn't have to get new adaptors. one of the best upgrades i made. glad you've had good experiences with your hayes mechs, but to me, hayes mechs suck.

I run a pair of Avid Juicy Seven's on my Mongoose. The work great for XC riding and the modulation is superb. I only have a problem when I DH ride or FR aggressively. The fronts start to fade a bit. A couple of times I almost thought I was out of brake. Thats why I am looking to upgrade to 8" rotor on the front. Whats all the hype about the Codes? Are they any better than the Sevens with an 8" rotor?
