That is total BS. My $279 Walmart Mongoose Blackcomb FS mtn bike is light years ahead of any $300 mtn bike from a LBS.
I was referring to the $59 "mountain" bikes at walmart. A $279 mongoose to me doesn't really fall into the classic xmart bike category. Since it pretty much is a $300 mountain bike. I would assume it would be around the quality of any other $300 bike, maybe a little better, but not light years better. A Kona Dawg Deluxe would be light years better.

Edit: i just noticed it's a full suspension $279 bike with discs, now i don't think it should compare to the other hardtails in the category, since a rear shock isn't just a feature, its a whole extra system on the bike.

The other day i had adjusted my Roadmaster Mt Fury to be running well when i give it to charity, and i noticed when i hold down the front brake and push forward a little bit, i can see both brake arms flexing about 1cm. I had a mini daytime nightmare about going a good 35mph down a hill and seeing a deer jump in front of me, slamming on my brakes, and the brake arms snapping under the pressure, sending me head first into the deer's ribs at 33mph (slowed me down 2mph until they snapped). scary. also the brake levers are plastic and flexy, also a little disturbing. the 35mph & deer crossing thing happened to me on my $30 goodwill bike, but the brakes worked so no one was injured.

I rode something similar to that for a short while.. I'd say 40lbs is about right .. The rear swingarm on mine was high ten steel.. Not too bad, but for 279 I'd spend that elsewhere.

Hey I got a Mongoose too! It's a Mongoose Fission (Canadian Mongoose lol) I bought at a local pawn shop for $100.
I compared it to my friends $300 Schwinn and Raleigh Dual suspensions and the only differences are that my bike has a Steel Frame, Threadless Headset, and a Shimano Crankset (that I added).
I'm not against any Mongoose Bikes, there like Ford, you got higher end, and lower end but all together they are pretty reliable. Go for the Mongoose, a friend of mine rides a Next which looks decent but it doesn't compare to the riding comfort of a Mongoose lol. Or just look at a pawn shop of flea market; you can find some decent condition Specialized bikes lol.

I run into riders just starting out on the trail every now and then and the one's that uses those very low end bikes always have a tough time getting up the hill. Their bikes are too heavey, the gears are limited, and the performance of the parts on their bike is uselly below par. In fact I ran into someone the other day and he had to walk most of the ride. A pity, I talked to him about his bike and his words were: I know I have to get another bike, something more worthwhile for this type of riding. Walmart, K-Mart, Target, and you name it, forget about it.

If it were me with a $100 to spend on a bike, I would comb Craigslist and eBay for a second-hand MTB. Don't go down the X-Mart bike path, it's not worth it.
