I need a new seat post, any suggestions?

So I am just getting into mountian biking and I was out today. After a small crash I noticed my seat was angled up, so I didn't worry too much and just kept riding. The seat got super loose and after I was done, I took it off and noticed the ridges that allow you to set the seat angle were stripped. So anyways, I need a new seat post. I don't need anything special, just hopefully something really durrable (and hopefully cheap) that I won't have to worry about. Does anyone have any suggestions, or are the certian things I should be looking for?

2nd the Thomson. It's purty and you can get the angle just right. I really hate normal seatposts with that stupid splined half-circle thing. (For a road bike, the Salsa Shaft is the bee's knees. Also works well on mountain bikes if you need some rear offset).

unless yr trying to build a light bike, don't spend $ on a seatpost - you can get low priced FSA, Easton alluminum posts on EBAY - that will be just fine - it only holds the seat in place ! as long as the length is correct you cannot go wrong

Uhhmm, diameter is sort of important as well.

Sometimes when you spend more money ,you end up spending less in the long run.

There are great seatposts out there that are not made by thomson. I have a thomson and love it, but you don't need to spend that much to get a decent post. Search on ebay for the right diameter and try to spend at least $15 - $20. I bought a Kore seatpost for my wifes old bike on ebay for about $15 and it works great, and is pretty light.

I don't really care if it is light, all that is really important to me right now is that it will work. The bike it is going on was only $150 (used), so I can't really see spending $80 for a seatpost. I'm really just starting to get into mountian biking, so if I start to get really serious, I'll probably be buying a new bike.

Yes, but forking over 80 dollars, when someone could buy a perfectly good reliable seatpoast for -50 dollars would be fine.

The new RaceFace seatposts have separated the seat clamps from the angle adjustment. I have a couple of them. Saddle level adjustment is super simple and very secure. The Deus is very nice at about $80 and the Evolve is a good value at around $40.

I think you can buy a Thomson from Ebay for about $50 USD. Other than that I was quoted $65 + shipping for a Thomson Elite.

+1, amen to that, that's my philosophy, ever since i started spending more for the parts I've been replacing I haven't had many if any problems with the new parts. You get what you pay for holds true to a pretty certain level

If you want "something really durrable" and "won't have to worry about it", then don't mentioned the word "cheap" in the same sentense . Thomson's price is fairly competible with most quality seat posts in the market.

One thing to keep in mind is, even though your current bike is only $150, you can always take the post with you and move it onto the new bike when you decide to upgrade. That's why quality parts are worth keeping.

Ya if you want to buy your new frame based on the size of your seat post.

I have a Titec El Norte and a Thomson Elite the adjustability on them are almost the same, but the Titec was half the cost.

Cambria currently has the Deus on sale for $60 and the Evolve is $35 at regular price. Thomsons never really did much for me because of the lack of set back and the cost. A straight post moves me too far forward for my taste. I've also tried a post that is bent like the Setback and ended up breaking my frame at the seat collar.

Read the OP. He asked for something cheap, not top of the range.

Buying at the top is often (IMO) worthwhile. But not with something as dead simple as a seatpost. An Easton is going to cost less than half that, and probably last just as long (and if it somehow breaks, he can buy another and still be ahead). And even then, longevity isn't all that important with mountain bike components- the entire bike will be replaced before the seatpost 'wears out'.

A Deus is a nice post. But lets face it, for something that's basically a tube and a clamp, it's mainly down to the bling factor.

I own a $140 carbon post, and have no qualms admitting that I bought it for bling rather than durability or weight. If I wanted value for money, I'd just go middle of the road aluminium.
