I'd get a Santa Cruz Heckler D AM Complete. - 1799
but that's me, i'm getting into more aggressive riding.
it really depends on what you wanted to do. some would go for a hardtail with higher spec components, but i'd go for a fully and live with a little less high end components. some prefer stumpjumper-like xc race hardtails, some would go for a freeride/slopestyle bike. you could get a dh bike like a stinky or bighit for under 2000, too. but looking at the topic, it's what *I* would do with 2k... so yeah. heckler's the bike for me.

Bike shopping forum...yeah it is.
I'd use the money for fuel to take a trip to Colorado to ride the bike I have.

$2000 is more than enough to buy a high quality dual suspension bike. Don't get stuck on any one bike or brand. Check out all your local shops and see what is on sale. There are always bikes being closed out or on big sale. Find a bike where the price is right; find a bike that you feel good on. But don't be loyal to a make or model, that will just get you paying too much. Good luck. I'm sure you will find a great bike. In 2005 I got a 2004 closeout for $1400 that was MSRP at $2500. It can easily be done.

I'd take $1500 of that and by a CUSTOM Quiring titanium frame, $500 for a nice wheelset, and finish the build with pieces from my Rig.

What kind of bike are you looking for? What kind of riding do you plan on using your bike for? Cross country, downhilling? For $2000 dollars you can buy a top of the line hardtail and laugh at people while you blow by them on the climbs. Unless you plan on just doing downhill I say screw full suspension. Many people will disagree but unless you have a ton of money to blow there's no reason to buy full suspension. My personal opinion is full suspension is overrated unless you can pony up $3500+ for a lightweight model. I spent $2000 on my Stumpjumper Pro a couple years back and wouldn't trade it for anything. I'll take a 19 lb. hardtail over a 26 lb. full suspension bike any day of the week.
