newbie needs to know what to buy

Hi, i am completly in the dark here looking to buy a new mountain bike. I have a budget of about $1200-$1400, but would like to keep my spending on the low side. I would like to know what exact brand and model you would recomend for me. Im 6' 170 pounds and would like to get into the sport. I would eventually like to do dirt jumping and what not, but do not see myself going over more than a ten foot drop. Please help.
Thanks,
Ryan

first off do you want dirt jumping (think bmx with a mtb) or downhill/all mountain
dirt jumping has a hardtail frame and DH is full suspension

Theres a new 07 Specialized bike call the P. All Mountain. It is in the same class as the Specialized DJ bikes, but it is can also handle the trails.

I would look for a used specialized FSR or a Canondale Jekyll..I'm new into MTB also and I bought a used Cannondale Jekyll for $600, which is probably more bike than I am capable of.....for now I hear Kona's, and santa cruz are nice also!

dont get a specialized FSR you would break it
FSR = XC bike, not downhill
a jekyll would be more in the right direction

I suggest something with a low standover height - it'll make those no-foot cans easier.

If you don't know what a no footed can-can is, then I suggest getting out there on a BIKE on the trails and get to know some real guys that do that stuff!
