Hayes 9 - loud screeching noise

Well my friend just bought a used Rockhopper Pro - great condition, ridden for only five months. The bike was upgraded to Hayes 9 hydraulic brakes, the stopping power on them are incredible when I gave it a test ride. However, the front brake/wheel seems to be making a LOUD piercing and very audible screeching noise, as if though it was metal-on-metal contact, everytime you move the wheel foward and then backwards.

What the hell could it be? I'm advising my friend to take it into his LBS to have it checked out - any thoughts on what it could be? Perhaps there's a quick remedy for it.... (crosses fingers).

Could be alot of things from a bent rotor to brake pads that need to be worn down a bit.

if you wanna test if it's the rotors then just swap the back to the front.
if the noise still here then you can rule out rotor

Hmm well I also have constant problems with my hayes 9s but I'm not sure if the noise you are talking about is the same as mine...My rear brake makes a VERY loud noise kinda like a....moaning whale, or someone else said a warbeling turkey. I havent fixed the problem all together yet but when the noise starts happening I readjust my calliper, but it only works for about 20 hard stops and then the noise starts up again. So try readjusting the calliper after you check your pads and see if the noise is still there.

Sounds 2 me like the pad housing (caliper) is out of adjustment.
Loosen the two bolts that hold it to the adapter, then squeeze
the brake lever. Next tighten the two bolts that you previously loosened.

It should be properly adjusted now...

also, try a bit of copper grease #BEHIND# the pad.
