just for the sake of argument:

recon 351 u-turn is 4.53 lbs and the Splice super is 4.7 lbs....a difference of 0.17 lbs for $245......I know the other functions may be way better but the unit cost for that function is an interesting factor....what do you guys think.

other options:

RS dirt 3 is 4.8lbs

minute 1 is 4.3 lbs

please help me understand. also, do any of you have any experience with this particular fork. Janson USA said that this fork does not have the kinds of problem that this like of forks had before the Answer "recall"........also, they said that this fork had a lock out.......

help me understand what I am missing....

Pheard 11-30-06 12:48 PM

You can't rate forks based on weights. If you want something sub 4lbs your going to be spending over 4-500 dollars.

Take a look at the manitou splice reviews on mtbr.

"IT LEAKS! SEALS ARE CRAP! I GIVE IT -5 STARS!!!"

"needs maintnence, the fork never works it just sucks. the the steeror tube came loose after a while now i need a new fork because its a piece of junk"

"Everything, it flexed bad right out of the shop, and the rebound was gone after 1 week of riding, i do not recommend this fork to anyone other than small, xc riders who won't abuse it in anyway. This thing is really a peice of plastic filled garbage, i had a 97 Manitou pro for years (still going strong on a friends bike) that never gave me the problem this fork has given me, this thing is junk."

"Leaks bad and the shock blew out on my first ride with it.
and it was only a 20 min ride!! Very bouncy, and stiff as well."

These are just some of the very first reviews. The bad reviews go on and on.

its a ok fork if that is your budget..

Pheard, those fork you listed are better but so is the price...they are 5 times better...lol

Weight isn't everything in a fork. Once you get a to a certain grade, they are similar weight as long as you stick with similar type. (i.e. Fox Vanilla R and RockShox Psylo (discontinued) has similar weight. But the fox out performs (to me at least) the Psylo. Esp the Psylo U Turn system problem. That is something you need to look when you research on forks.

thanks for helping me understand. I am very much with you about all these. I also read the mtbr.com reviews before I posted my question here. The thing that confuses me about the reviews though that its always, almost always, so biased and case specific that it may not apply to my situation. There are some general no no's, but often its not so clear.

I have checked some of the comments and observed what bikes they rode, it does not look like their bikes are meant for exclusive trail riding or xc. And, many of them were using the fork for jumping and such. well, I am not looking for a jumping fork....plain trail riding. Some of those guys were riding Cdale Jekyll, Giant Raign, Trek Fuel 80, Giant AC etc........and they are expecting the performance of a high end fork or a dirt jumping fork from a fork that is designed more for general test riding........this high expectation and subsequent dissapointment does not really justify bad reviews.....and at $50 I am not expecting it to perform like a $250 fork.

one thing though is the RS recon at $295 price 6 time better than the Splice super....is it?

thanks.

I think thats a pretty good deal for $50.

nmn25 11-30-06 07:01 PM

I've ridden one on my friends bike, and for the price, it performs excellent. His hasn't blown after about 6 months (some stanchion wear though).

For $50, you almost cant go wrong. Even if it lasts for a month. Iw ould say get it if you are just doing xc and trail.

You can also always get a used marzocchi/rockshox. I know you can pick up like an mzcomp, which is an excellent entry (real) fork for around that price (used of course).

However, as I said before, you can't really go wrong for 50 (unless that is all the $ you have).

sherpaPeak 12-01-06 10:55 AM

okay...I am wheekhotting here.........oh...wheelhotting means, drawing as much attention to yourself as you possibly can........didn't you already know that.

now about the fork......

I decided to buy it as an experiment........I will try it and see how bad really is........will post a feeback once I am done with my expriment or after it sucks beyond imagination...
