protective cup for mountain biking?
does anyone know if it is possible to wear a cup while riding? or is there any special gear designed to protect the privates when doing technical riding?
i am thinking only for downhill/technical riding when i wear knee protectors, elbow guards and thick gloves and other protective gear when the chance of a big crash is relatively high. i've been meaning to try out a regular sports cup i have from hockey but no idea if one can ride "normally" or if it will interfere.
although it happened most as a kid when riding a bike too big, i have also "met the top tube" in some crashes recently (like when jumping or doing a big drop).

I've never tried to wear a cup, but if you deduce that they're made to be worn during physical activity, I image they would work fine. The added bonus is the bigger "package" look while wearing tight lycra! ha ha. BTW, I usually wear baggies.

I played baseball for 12 years and could never figure out how other players could run fast with their cups on so most of the time I never wore one until the ump told me I had to. That along with the fact that no ball ever got past my glove Anyway.....I think a cup is a great idea for the bike if you are doin the drops and the more extreme riding where the boys have a greater chance of making a close relationship with the seat on a hard impact. I dunno how comfortable it would be sitting down though, because the cup would probably make contact with the seat.

I couldn't get one to work properly in football. I still wore it thank god but it never quite fit right. Maybe buy one that is 1 size to small so it takes up less room?

I've always hated cups, always will, I guess they're good for protection, but so uncomfortable when you're working out/moving around a bunch. But if there's the chance that wearing one will save you once from introducing nuts to frame, i say go for it.

I think they're called Nard Guards...
Is your "package" up to spec? I mean most hardcore DH/techno/jumping dudes think they've got Balls of Steel - so I wouldn't think protection would be necessary...
:-)
Jeez - just the other day, I coulda sworn mine were solid Ti...then the trail stood up and proved who was boss!

When i was 8, I was the goalie for the soccer team. One day, I took a direct hit in the nads by the ball. Some how, the cup cracked, and pinched my "package"...
I'll never wear a cup again! Traumatized for life.

This discussion is quickly spiraling down the toilet! Sure is a nice break from all the political war banter though...

As a goalie for hockey and lacrosse I've had more than my fair share of this unpleasant experience, and I have found the best way to deal with the pain, lay back in a sit-up position and take deep breathes, this works real well, trust me.

but yeah, i always hated wearing a cup and never wore one for soccer but i did for hockey as the chance and damage potential just seemed so much higher.
well i think i'll try it out sometime on the bike... probably not today as i'm leading a group ride and we won't be doing any major stuff...
the question is really if it interfers with sitting on the seat and the rocking motion from pedalling... i guess i'll only know by trying it out.
p.s. what a coincidence! that store thedon252 linked above is in Bexar county (San Antonio TX) right near where my parents live...

Could you image the job description for the guy that makes those!
So sir, what is it that you do?
Well, I'm into supporting athletes.
Oh, you're a promotor?
Not exactly.
.....etc.
