Did Ben stuff an S54 in that thing? That's crazy, although not really sleeper enough for my tastes.

He did. Sleeper? Says the E36 cone-crusher. How long you been doing that?

I've only dabbled a few times, nothing serious. The return on action vs. time sacrificed is unfavorable.

I hear you. You should go to open lapping sessions at tracks. You get a lot more seat time and I honestly believe that it is less punishing to the car than parking lot cone courses.

Pardon my ignorance, what is HPDE?

Agreed, track is definitely the way to go - I've done HPDE's, but my skills are not there for open lapping yet.

edit: acronym confusion

I think it's a function of course design and whether the designer has a FWD or RWD personal bias. The sessions I've seen (never drove, I'll admit) have the guys barely getting out of 1st gear and throwing the car around more than driving through it. The suspension seems to be jacked up, brakes and tires are taking a beating and it seems like revlimiters are being hit all the time.

[OT]STI swap into Legacy GT 2.5 pwns joo!!!!shift1![/OT]

Getting back to bike stuff - I pretty much bought everything I need already, although it would be super if I had a suspension fork for my Brodie. Also, I think I'm going to get a custom SS/FG CX commuter frame made in time for spring. That would be very self indulgent, but totally worth it.

The brakes, tires and engine (not to mention your paint and windshield) take much more abuse on the track. For example in one thirty minute session you can brake from 120 mph down 70 mph 15 times and then from 132 mph down to 85 mph 15 times, within about 20 seconds. And that's only for two of 15 corners, the front and back straight...
Ah, but not everyone drives a Porch. Are the track sessions the cause of your MAF woes?

I think the reason why I believe a cone-course session is harder is because it looks like all knees and elbows whereas a car on a full blown track appears to be a lot smoother.

I know that, I was just joshing you. I also got to use "Porch" in a post.

Do you have some kind of aftermarket air filter or cold-air-intake type of thing or is it much deeper than that?

You get the skills by doing the lapping sessions. By open lapping, I mean the ones with controlled passing: only on the straights and only when waved by. I don't mean full on racing/attack mode.

Thanks for the clarification. The BMWCCA events I have participated in share the format you describe.

I've read that the little wire in MAF sensors can get gummed up with the sprays that the aftermarket air filters require. Can you go back to the stock air filter while keeping the CAI and the new ECU mappings and see if that solves your problem?

I'm going to really talk out of my ass here (doesn't stop any one else here so why should it stop me) and ask if your CAI can take the OE filter. If so, have you tried running the stock filter with the CAI and the ECM programming.

I'd guess that the MAF failures (ass talking here) are due more to the aftermarket air filter and/or the CAI than to anything else. If you can start by trying to isolate the cause you can then obviously address it. Some CAI take a different air filter so I suppose you'd have to put back the original filter and airbox. But then I'm guessing your new ECM program was designed for a CAI with the increased airflow and wouldn't work well. If that's the case you may have to back all of those fun bits off.

My christmas wish was for some components to build up a Kona Explosif frame thats been under my bed in the box for just over a year now. But, 2 weeks ago both my exisiting bikes were stolen. The insurance has paid out £3000, so the christmas list now gets sent to the insurance company.

To replace one bike will be a Santa Cruz Chameleon with the X AM build kit (from the santa cruz uk website) in orange powdercoat.

That comes in at £1680, leaving £1320 to spend on components for the Kona. I already have some Reba Team forks, XTR shifters and rear mech and Race Face turbine chainset. The parts I am considering to go with that are
Mavic 317 on Hope Pro IIs
Hope Headset
Formula Oro Puro brakes
Race Face bars, stem & seatpost
XTR or XT front mech

As for my christmas wish list all I want is a dry winter and a new camelback.
