I'm glad to see that the guy got caught. It's a shame that people resort to these methods to try to "protect" the environment by trying to harm others.

I wonder what would have happened if a group of MTBers caught him stringing up the wire. Do ya think they might have found an alternate use for that wire?

Naaah!

What a lunatic. He isn't an "ecoterrorist", just a crazy old guy. Even ELF, the most extreme active eco-terrorist group doesn't try to hurt people, they just burn down ski lodges and Hummer dealerships.

And why go after cyclists? Jeez, we're already a bunch of granolas. Go after the 4x4/ATV crowd, if anything.

The ELF is higher up on the list of u.s. "terrorist threats" than many foreign nations we may or may not have armed troops in right now...how whacked is that? (quite whacked, indeed)

Something similar has been going on in my area, not quite as severe as wire accross the trail, but rather tacks on the trail and trees cut down accross the trail.

Read about it here

Weak! What an @$$. I'd try for attempted murder charges. Just show the cyclist who got cut on the neck as evidence... First degree, even. It was thought out, obviously.

I imagine the 4x4 crowd would be a little more difficult to sabotage. Nails in the tires sure, wires wouldn't cut it. They also are more violence prone given the rednecks that seem to gravitate to this "sport". I used to really love takin' the jeep out and was always amazed by some of the rubes and their antics.
Disclaimer: Some MTB's are violent prone and most off road vehicle users are environmentally aware. They kind of have to, look how much hatred a bicycle gets let alone gas powered vehicles and their larger capacity for destruction.
That being said, I would not have had the restraint.

He certainly should not get to just sit in jail. They ought to put a hoedad in his had and make him bend over and plant seedlings for a few seasons. That would be some useful "environmentalism."

I recall a similar incident around 1990, where some of the trails in Fish Creek park were being sabotaged with wire, wheel-eating holes, logs and such. It was walkers "fighting back" against the new sport of mountain biking. Instead of keeping riders away, we were all "What? There are trails there?". There was kind of an explosion of singletrack riders in the area after that. Moths to a flame...

Vicious, vicious walkers.

The school x-country team practices at my trails sometimes.

Sometimes, they move faster than I do
