Specialized Or Trek?
I'm seriously looking at getting a bike soon. I'm going for the Trek 6500 or the Specialzed Rockhopper Comp disc. There is a $50 price difference (trek more $) at my LBS but that doesn't mean too much. Compenents are different however, especially the forks and that the Trek has hyraulic brakes. So which should I go with guys and gals? I know I will need to ride both but i'd like some feedback. thanks.

I would have said said Specialized for sure a few months ago, but then I picked up a Trek 6000 two weeks ago, and I really like it. Very solid bike, I love it. I just posted pics in the "post your rigs" thread if you're curious. The Trek is more bike for the money, IMO.

Still kicking.
I just had to look twice to see if this was mtnbiker66. Fortunately it wasn't.

Personally, I like the feel of the Treks, I havent really checked out the components list but after riding both I liked the feel of the Trek a little more.
Granted this was just around a shop and a parking lot.

mtnbkr86, go for which ever one feels better to you, since they are in the same price range, go for the one that feels the best to you.
Really, don't comment, your riding a very sad excuse for a bike. Never buy a bike based on how it looks, looks are 4th tier, insignificant. Just because it is $200 and it's a full suspension bike, doesn't mean, it's good. Most of those people you see on the trails with those specializeds have put anywhere around $200-$2,000+ into their bikes, not because it makes the bike look cool, but because it improves the bikes performance. Plus don't give me that FS hullabaloo either, there are people out there that will do everything on a hardtail, that go as big as people on full suspension bikes.
Always base what bike is ideal for a person, based on:
Intended riding style
Fit
Price(400-500 is the basic starting point for mtb's)
How it rides.
Parts spec(Parts can be upgraded.)
Weight
Unimportant:
Color
Looks
Price: Avoid all FS bikes under $1,000. Under $1,000 you are getting old, out of date suspension designs, and the general build quality isn't up there with the ones at $1,000 and up.

Oh my I don't think i've ever had so many responses so fast! haha. who the heck is mtnbkr66? i promise you all i'm not him...oh Go* what did he do to you people? I'm leaning toward the trek because I really want hydraulic brakes. Also, either the front or rear derailleur is a deore lx as opposed to the regular deore on the specialized. And then appropriately lastly in importance, i like the paint scheme on the trek more. i know this may sound weird but when i think "specialized" i think toys 'r us. haha

you would prolly get more for your money if you went with a giant. my first three bikes were giants. If your not into that i would just go with what feels better when you test ride em. i am partial to specialized though since i have one. good luck with whatever bike you decide to get!!

without knowing what kind of riding (riding style and terrain) you are going to do.....it is hard to give you a constructive response. see, at a specific price point like $800-$900 the difference between two different brands (specially for established brands like Trek and Specialized) is very minimum. One brand may put a better fork and the other brand may put a better brake...or components.....but thats how they differenciate their products at a certain pricepoint. So, they can attract customers with specific preferences.....in this case....if a better fork is important for you, you may pick the Specialized.....but, if the hydro break is important for some one, he/she will pick the Trek.....
and then, there is the cult following.....Lot of people ride specialized bikes....so they are biased, including myself......there is a group here who thinks no matter what, Hardrock is the best bike ever made......so, when ever there is a question about which bike to buy.....they come up with..."GET A HARDROCK".......my response to them is -----Opinions are like a$$ holes and they both stink......and better kept unexposed.....
back to your question....
get the bike that fits you. You can not really go horribly wrong with either. While Trek may be a Pure XC type bike Rockhopper would be a little more versatile. So, if I were doing cross country, road riding, traveling, commuting, single tracks....I would go with the Trek........But, if I were doing a little more aggressive XC and small jumps and stuff....I would get the Rockhopper.
I personally like the Rockhopper frame....it fits me and it is pretty versatile.......Geometry, strong tubing and welds, drop outs....etc.....
