beat-up XT or good condition Deore LX?
With two new road bikes in the family, and my boyfriend's sister in need of a bike (just for riding around town with her son), one of our mountain bikes is heading out.
He has a schwinn homegrown and I have a marin eldridge grade, probably both of the same 99 vintage and approximately the same size. His is more responsive aluminum, mine a more forgiving cro-mo, and he has much better components (XT), while I have Deore LX.
Now, should we give the sister her bike or should I give her mine and take his?
I think I should move up to a better bike, and give her the easier one to ride (my cro-mo) but here's the dilemma:
I bought mine new and have taken really good care of it, no major crashes, few minor ones. He is the second owner of this and his bike has seen many many more miles, with heavier (and more hardcore) people riding it.
How durable are XT components from the '99 era? Would his components be that much better with all this extra wear and tear?
Any thoughts?

i'd take the good lx no doubt. my bro runs a '99-era XT, and it still shifts primo smooth... but i'd much rather take the modern, good condition lx over a beat up derailleur. it'll have more life, possibly shift better.

If you want the better bike, take the schwinn. If you want her to have the better bike, give her the schwinn.

I prefer a bike that is in a good condition rather then better components

do not even think about it - you can hardly tell diff bewteen XT & LX when they are both new - a new LX will be better than an old XT...

I'd keep the Marin .. the steel bikes are expensive now and has a longer fatigue life ... a 7 year old aluminum bike with wear is not a good trade for it.
