So apparently they cut the front and rear cables to specific lengths...
 

Because I just cut the rear cable for the front! I already cut it, so now the other new cable I have is too short to reach the rear! Damn! You'd think for a 15 dollar cable set they could at least make both lengths of the cable equal lengths!! Now I have to find some way to get a cable before I leave town tomorrow for the festival :mad:

They were Avids. They're good quality, but as often as I replace them in retrospect it was a waste of cash. I was running the Avid Flak Jackets before, those are 25+ bucks a set! Smooth as hell, though... but not worth 25 bucks. I replace them a couple times a year or more, especially during the summer when it starts to rain and mud becomes more prevalent. I just ordered new housing and cables and all fittings.

Yep, they sure do! ;) Consider it a lesson learned. Just bought a cable yesterday, (stainless), for about 3 bucks, so no big deal anyway. At least it was a cheap lesson, eh?

I've done it like twice before, too! I always forget! Damn!

How do you know if you need to replace the cables?

oh man ... that happened to me as well ... except I knew the rear was longer. I was inserting the rear through the housing and it got snagged, but I kept pushing. A single wire in the cable got bunched up and it got all unravelled quite a ways up. So I was lucky and my front fit for the rear .. I had to trim some housing downt o make it fit, but it just barely did. btw, I have full metal jackets.

I just put a new rear derailleur cable on my BH ..

That's my second one in like 4 months... lol.

JUst buy the $3.00 stainless ones.. that's what I do...

My brakes started feeling crappy. The housing just gets dirty and the cable doesn't smoothly move through the housing anymore.
