Should be able to pick up the Stump for around a thousand (but have to add taxes). Also consider using any discounts (such as those offered if member of a bike club) to discount the price further. You might be able to find a 2006 bike which would provide a good discount.

For all around aggressive Hardtail I would get a Santa Cruz Chameleon frame and this build kit
Bike One:
Chameleon frame (color white)): $550
Build Kit: $594 (with 15% wheelworld discount, coupon code MARCHMAD15)
https://wheelworld.com/itemdetails.cf...gId=39&id=3309
it is a little more than $1100, but heck of a bike....
Bike Two:
For pure XC: Kona Kula https://www.konaworld.com/bikes/2k7/KULA/index.html
I can not imagine a sweeter, simpler, and more awesome handling XC bike than Kula. Again sorry, its a bit more than $1100....
Scenario Three:
go crazy and build a 29er or a single speed with nice steel frame...
take your pick

If you are considering a frame and build kit, you might also consider a Nashbar Steel Frame:

and the above mentioned wheelworld build kit. That puts you under $650.

Kona Caldera. Sick ride. One of the best hardtails for the money. Can usually get for around $800. The geometry is a bit toward the rear than some XC bikes. But find a Kona dealer and check out the 2006.

I suggest the KONA Blast or FUJI Nevada series.
Take a look: https://www.konaworld.com/bikes/2k7/BLAST/index.html
and https://www.fujibikes.com/2007/mtb.asp?subcat=2
The most important is this: disk brakes on both wheels, rapid fire
shifting, "Butted Aluminum" frame (not crap aluminum), and Shimano.

kev those are fine bikes, but clearly not the "Best Hardtail Under $1100"
I like the look of the marin hydroformed bikes like the palisades trail. haven't heard much about them though.

Actually, the bike shop where I acquired my own last year,
said this was their best selling hard tail MTB bike, which I found
unnecessarily high-end to my needs.
https://www.fujibikes.com/2007/bikes.asp?id=306&subcat=2
It has Shimano Deore which is probably what your minimum specs are.
