Just a question
 

So im a fairly new mountain biker, like a year and half or so and my bike is now needing all new parts. Its a K2 ZED 4.0 and im replacing the cassette, chain and probably the crankshaft. I was going to get a shimano dura ace cs7700 cassette and chain but i was wondering if there were any better products out there. Also does it matter what type such as 11-21t or 11-23t ect i use. Any help on the matter would be great. Thanks

Do you realize that dura ace is a road Casette?

It will still work, but has a very tight range of gears.

11-21/11-23 is the number of teeth on the rings. A mountain casette is more like 11-34/11-32

unless hes a dj... a road cassette can be quite fun with dj.

SS would be even more fun.

Many downhillers run road cassettes.

First, it's a crank set, Crank shaft is in a motor.
That's no big deal though.

Second and more importantly, you should be able to just change out the front chain rings with the chain and cassette.

Hmmm so whats a good cassette for like pretty much anything. Uphill mostly though.

How steep are your climbs (i.e., where do you ride)?

mission ridge, devils gulch, mad lake plus im going to try and hit a bunch of other places this summer

That means nothing to me. Just like if I told you I was going to hit Mt. Baldy, Jumpingpound/Cox Hill, Moose Mountain, Fernie, plus a bunch of other places this year.

A more general location or elevations would be nice. But really, if the trails don't gain much elevation, you could get away with a 12-25/27 but if you experience elevation changes, you'll want an 11-32/34.

Any MTB casette will do fine. Look for either a 11-32/11-34.

My wife and I prefer a 12 to 34 cog Shimano XT Cassette. The 34 is nice on those long steep climbs and the next two down, 30 & 26, are perfect (for me at least) grinding up the steep technical climbs. I've only found an 11 cog useful on my road bike and much prefer the larger cogs at the higher-gear end of the 12-34.

Either a 34-11 or a 32-11 will work just fine.
34-12 is good too.

Devil's Gulch is a loooonnnnggggg grind. Give yourself the advantage of a mountain cassette.

i live in wv and i run a 11-28 you should buy a couple, find the one for you and then return the others

Yes and I know some jr racers in this area that run an 11-28 with just a middle and big ring but for us mortals a 32 or 34 is really nice.

I use a 11-28 as well with 22-32-42 in the front and I ride lots of hills. The granny gear is plenty low.. sometimes I wish I had a 30 or 32 max for use with the middle ring though so I don't have to wimp out to the 22 as much.

thanks for the help on cassette but what a about a chain, b/c i my old one broke so i went to get a new one and the bike shop guy sold me one, a scram pc 951 and it is tearing the ****aki out of my cassette, it keeps slipping and grinding the teeth and i dont want it doing to a new cassette

i not quite sure how it could be shredding your cassette, but is your drivetrain free of dirt/grime/sand/whaetever? as a rule of thumb, i usually change the cassette and the chain at the same time, so they wear together. how many miles did you have on your drivetrain before you changed the chain?

the cassette has considerably more miles than the chain and they werent changed at the same time, so thats probably why its slipping huh
