New Marin and Upgading Older Trek

I recently purchased a 2006 Marin Palisades from REI. It was a great price and fits me very well. It also came with a decent component set (Deore) for a low-mid level bike. The drive train is pretty smooth but I would really like it to be smoother and more precise. This is where the upgrades come in for the Marin and my wife’s 2001 Trek 4300 (very very low end Shimano components).

I plan on replacing the Marin drive train with XT. This will leave me with Deore shifters and front\rear mechanics with no home. I would like to utilize the Deore components on the Trek 4300. So these are the questions I have.

The 4300 is a 7 speed (Suntour cassette). Could I replace the Suntour cassette with my SRAM 950?

Would I have to replace the chain as well? The cranks are Shimano Dual SiS.

Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.
