Measuring Stem Length ?

Hi All,
I am going to be swapping handlebars and I have to get a different stem as my new bar will be 25.4mm clamp diameter. I want to measure my existing stem so I can order the exact same length.

Are the measurements in all the catalogs center (headset) to center (handlebar) ?
I should know this ......... :p
