massive upgrade HELP!

Ok, I have a specialized, like a 95 or so. The only thing that's been done to it is I've changed the wheels/hubs, put a disc on the front and put an older marz z1 freeride on it. Anyways. My question is:

Should I do a complete upgrade of this thing to 9speed? All new components basically keeping only the fork/frame/handlebar? I can order parts pro-deal style but I was also thinking maybe it would just be easier to turn it into a singlespeed/rigid fork for commuting and buy a whole new bike. I don't even know what to order as far as a groupo set goes to upgrade this thing either. Any help is appreciated. I >NEED< to go mountain biking again.
