First day at LBS job
Overall, today was a pretty smooth day. We sold 2 bikes, apparently a relatively low number- a hardtail MTB and a FS all-mountain bike. Had a few repairs done, and sold a few helmets.
The store has a group ride that departs on 8 am on Saturday and 9 am on Sunday. The shop opens at 10am Sat. and 12 pm Sun.
I wake up at 6:15am. Eat, change, out the door on my bike by 6:45. The shop is about 12k from my house, so I spin around the area for about an hour, and then head to the shop. The owner, along with about 6 other guys were there, and we headed out for a ride.
This was my 20th-ish ride this year, but for some of the girlymen in our group, it was their first ride of the year (this is Toronto, Ontario, Canada). I proceeded to shred their legs off. I wanted to hold a pace of 30 kph (19 mph) for the whole ride, but whenever I got to the front of the line and dialed it up above 28 kph (17.5 mph) I started to drop people. Ugh.
After a big hill that shattered the group, it was time to head back to the store. When I got back, my comp read 67 km (42 miles). Then, I realized I forgot to bring my shoes. As in, my non-cycling shoes to walk around in the shop in. D'oh! What a way to start the day.
I started the day by building up some kid bikes. I was surprised by how little is actually done by the retailer- just put the bars/stem in the headtube, put on the front wheel, connect the front brake & pedals, and then adjust everything. Pretty easy- I did one every half an hour for 3 hours.
I proceeded to help some customers. A guy came in with SPD-SL cleats that wouldn't fit into his Sidi shoes because the screws were too short, and we gave him longer screws. A kid came in complaining about his disc brakes being "questionable" (it was funny to see a 12 year old kid use "questionable"- kwaes-tien-abel).
We all just sat around for the rest of the day, chatting about mostly non-cycling related topics. Headed home at about 5 on my bike again.
Total day's distance : 77.5k
Percent of Zipp 404's earned: 3.5%
Coolness factor: 8.5/10
Hopefully they'll let me work on some REAL bikes tomorrow...

Yeah, that and V-brakes. Especially cheap V-brakes, like the ones on kid's bikes. It's so hard to get them centered and adjusted right b/c there's no barrel adjuster like on road side-pulls!

I recently started working at a bike retailer. They are a shop and online wherehouse-type operation. I open boxes of goodies all day and count them. It is the coolest.

Isn't it bad form in the roadie world to take your turn at the front of a group rolling along nicely and try to significantly increase (or decrease) the pace? Escpecially if no one follows your anti-girlyman attitude?
To say nothing of simple common courtesy of riding with others in a GROUP setting (vs what YOU want).

We've got a guy in our group who does that all the time, both on the dirt and on the road. We call him "dork" and roll our eyes. What's worse, when a rider who's faster than him shows up, he backs off and won't push the pace because he knows he won't "win". Peletonracer, if you're that fast, just tell the rest of the group that you're going off the front for a solo effort and that you'll wait up the road a ways.
