Headset help!

Hey folks. my girlfriends bike just came in the mail! we ebayed it. other than a few scratches previously unmentioned to us before bidding and two flat tires, it is a sweet bike! 05 womens stumpjumper. In addition to the before mentioned blemishes, the bikes headset is loose! I do not know if it is improperly assembled or if it's worn out. the ebay ad said that the bike was only riden five times but who knows if that's true or not. anyways, i'm thinking it is assembled improperly. problem is i am unable to fix it. there is a gap between the pressed frame races and the top of of the headset (the part right below the spacers). inbetween the top piece of the headset and the pressed frame races is a small metal piece. i cannot seem to get the top piece of the headset to fit snugly with this. any help? thanks a lot and happy triails!

you can build a press rather easily-unless you have already tried this-and for very little $. Try the BF search, build a press cheap, and see if you can't push it on. If not the headset may need replacing. They are relatively inexpensive but difficult to remove. Park makes a pretty neato cup remover for thirty bucks.

Your bearings may be upside down. Or one could be upside down. Or the top cap could just need to be snugged down. It might be a good idea to pay a bike shop to give the bike a thorough checking over. If you'd rather do it your self carefully dissemble the headset. If the bearings are in a cage, place the open side against the race. You may need to flip this over but all my headsets with loose bearings in cages were assembled in this manner. There will most likely be an upper race and a compression ring that fits inside the upper race. They are placed on top of the upper bearing as it is laying in the upper cup. This could also be what's affecting your 'set. Good luck.
