This has gotten a bit too political for me. I say jm01 and wvxc both could use some of this.

It's not that you did any ONE thing wrong, after a series of events you made some wrong choices:You failed to communicate with the officer, you believed her,I would have, ask to see a badge next time. Some folkes here seem to doubt the reasoning, that matters not.You simply ought to have asked about the fee,you shopuld never leave your house broke, you pee'd at a real goofy place and time.Never tell anybody %^*# ,hey dude, you did not ONE thing that wasn't silly. You're obviously very young, older, wiser people are more clever than that.As for Jack858, I'm glad he lives in England as well.

Phatman, first of all, secure legal counsel immediately. The very best you can afford. You don't want to enter a criminal proceeding defending yourself. A person who acts as his own attorney has an idiot for a client, to use a cliche. Depending on the severity of the charges, it could even impact your employment.

Secondly, focus on the fact that YOU HAD NO IDEA it was a ranger. Drive the fact that you thought you were dealing with some bizarre person who was pretending to be law enforcement, or at best, a weekend park volunteer "acting under color of law" for reasons unknown to you. Inform the court you were fearful for your safety and you were concerned it may have even been a ploy to steal your bicycle.

Hopefully you have a background that is entirely free of interactions with the police. This will bolster your case and show that you are a decent and law-abiding person. Dress well for the court appearance, be respectful, and simultaneously be very confident that you are completely in the right for not understanding what she was trying to communicate. Good luck.

I'm not saying that what I did wasn't stupid. I should've had money on me. I usually have a few bucks, but I spent it on the tip for the waitress at the restaurant Friday night. I should have just gone back to my car and went to an atm. I should have been nicer to the ranger. All in all, I was a dumbass, and maybe I do deserve a ticket. However, I don't believe that what I did was criminally malicious, and I shouldn't have a criminal record because of it.

I didn't recognize that she was a ranger, I didn't even realize I was in the same trail system, since that particular area has a lot of trails. I just figured she was some rent-a-cop with a power trip, and I treated her as such. when we went back to her truck, it said STATE RANGER in pretty large letters, I figured that was as good as showing me a badge.

anyways, I've got three uncles that are lawyers, and they've given me some good legal advice. Mainly they helped me look over the form that the ranger/cop gave me, it turns out that the park ranger didn't sign the form, and date it for last year. I hope that will help me out.

Phatman, with all due respect to your uncles, you need a strategy in addition to technical oversights. If anything, that should be your backup plan for this mess. By leading with it, you are acknowledging guilt and essentially saying charges should be dropped only because someone wrote 4/06 instead of 4/07 on a form. Technicalities might work in the movies, but it's a risky move in the real world.

I don't really want to do anything tricky, I just plan on saying what I've said here, have a lawyer tell me what stupid things not to say, and try to work some deal where I do community service or pay a fine in return for keeping my record clean. I'm going to do trail maintenance this summer anyways cause its a good thing to do to maintain trails, I suppose I could use it for my court mandated service.

If you're a lawyer, perhaps we oughta have this convo in PM...

Sounds like an episode of cops. Why do those darn cops bother me? Maybe it is because I have crystal meth and a stolen weapon on me?

Ok. well I'm gonna go ebay, buy a police uniform, and tell you to give me all of your name, birth date, address, and social security number. You're going to do it right? no, you'd tell me to **** off. At least I hope you would.

I think they have you on the evasion as the gatekeeper informed you. That is rude that the policy is not stated.

If the officer hadn't identified herself I don't think you should be liable for deceiving an officer. Of course, if the officer tells the judge that she did identify herself, thats that. You may want to read the official complaint before making your case. If she overlooked lying in the first place, you may be able to evade the extra hassle.

What a PITA! After Memorial Day the state of CT tries to charge us to go into the state forest we ride in. So we just park up the road and ride from there. Not a problem. I'd hate to run into Little Hitlers in my area.

luckily here in Va. they are soooo smart they charge you for parking in a state park but not for being in one. solution? ride in from a street or private lot and you are legal.
with so many folks being so lawsiut happy over everything the state parks have to charge fees for 2 reasons. 1 to pay for lawsuit insurance and 2 folks who are up to no good usually arent willing to pay $5 to do it and will go elswhere.
sorry to hear your troubles Phatman. Im wondering if, since she didnt sign it, do you REALLY have a court date or was it a "up yours" way of trying to scare you? I would try to make sure the ticket went through

Yes, your honor, I was dealing with some bizarre person who was pretending to be law enforcement and I followed them back to their truck.

Legal advice on a bicycle internet forum is awesome.

Usually the fee to enter goes towards the up keep of the park(including the trails.) Assuming that this is a state park, there are usually entry fees. If so not the smartest of ideas. Next time just check with the state and see if they do a season pass, it'll be around $50 but will allow you entry for the whole season.

some sickos on this thread want to see this as "dirty", continue to dwell on this one aspect, or, as in your case, pass negative judgement on this comment, perhaps because of some sexual hangups.

As I've stated, the kid, mom, me and the BF have fun with this...good thing I didn't mention the collapsable baton in this context, would have brought out some sick BDSM in you.

Anyway, try the 2 step plan to solve your problem

1. Bend Over

2. Pull Out Stick

fine print:
Care must be taken when performing Step 2 as any remaining brain matter may leak out

It wasn't a wink...it was a BIG GRIN

it's funny, get it?

Actually, it was my sister, her aunt, a federal judge, that started this thing...everyone got a laugh out of it, and moved on

Perhaps being European, living in Canada, makes us a little less uptight about sex compared to many Americans

No need to apologize...we have fun with natural human activities up here

Jeez

EDIT...I should mention that my sister's in-laws, now in their 80's, continue to maintain a "clothing optional" lifestyle, for themselves, kids, and grandkids...it's fun when we get together at Christmas and get to see everyone

Holy crap! All of a sudden, "grandma got run over by a reindeer" takes on a whole different meaning!

And don't be quick to judge us Americans dammit. I enjoy sexual innuendos just as much as any sucky beer guzzling canadian.

I also know that its all in jest. And anyone that IS sickened by it should go watch some beastiality porn to truly know the meaning of sick...
