What are the rules for painting a MTB?
As many of you may know, I like painting bikes. I've painted all of my roadies, and my wifes old comfort/MTB with rather consevative colors.
However, I've got this old green Rockhopper Comp that is in really great shape, but the paint is trashed. I'm upgrading some of the components with a newer set of LX components and probably some better brakes, as MTBR says the Dia-Compe VC-735 brakes stink. Anyway, I'm just wondering if there are any present fads for colors of MTB's and such. To be honest, I want to paint it something as God Aweful "IN YOUR FACE!!!" that I possibly can. And I mean on the verge of, "totally blinding" is what I'm thinking. When people see it they'll say, "OMG, What the...." I'm thinking something in Flourescent Hot Pink and Flourescent Green. I want to be spotted by commercial airliners if I get lost out there. :D Any other ideas? |
i dunno, but it'll probably end up having christmas lights wrapped around the frame

Paint it that mango color that Specialized is using on some of the Stumpies, but add some more orange and some metal flake to it. That would be garishly bright but oddly enough would probably look pretty cool on a mountain bike.
|
^^^ You mean, sort of a bright metallic orange?
My commuter is a darker burnt orange with metal flake. I'm not sure if I want another orange bike. |
Pick up one of the photochromic paint kits and do it that way. You know what I mean? One of those paint jobs that is green, or purple, or black, or blue depending on where you stand and how the sun is hitting it.

Pink seemed to be somewhat hot last year, but don't see too much about it now. Maybe that's the color if you want a somewhat different bike...
I've always liked the C-dale orange/yellow type bikes and one year it did a kind of fade that I loved. It really stands out in a crowd. But I'm sure you want something that hasn't actually been done before... hmm. Visual creativity isn't my strong point. That's why I have friends that are good at it and a SO that does interior design... Oh, to answer your question, why must there be rules? http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/07/C...e/7FS2_neo.jpg |
Paint it clear. That way you can sneak up on people and suprise them. :D

anybody ELSE see only Half the front fork?!?! As for color schemes, I'd imagine a fluorescent orange DOT standard kind, fading into a fluorescent green with a metallic white stripe wrapping around the frame in some sort of way. That way it breaks up the two bright colors. And of course, the width of the stripe will determine how much of a color breakup it turns out to be. |
Pearl white with fogs to red on the sides of the tubes with flames in variegated gold leaf.

It reduces the weight of the bike, obviously, and is quite an improvement over the bulky two-sided forks. |
paint it pearlesent so it looks one colour at one point then one wild colour another..
:D |
It is a Lefty, I don't know that I'd call it new.
|
Don't do it in the living room.

I would say paint half of it the orange that the '06 Kona Jake the Snakes' are and the other half the green that the 07's are. Both are blindingly bright, but with their powers combined you can probably make someone puke.

Metallic Red, for that 1977 Supercycle appeal.

Left side bright pink, right half "sublime". When people go to the other side of the bike they will think you have another bike. People will be confused, especially if you tell them the other side is not a different color. Heh heh. Even have different color cranks on each side. Maybe different color grips or two color bottles. I know you can pull it off and have it look good.
That's in you face, isn't it? |

We have a winner. If you want the second best idea, I'd paint it Neon green and Watermelon pink, in alternating bands. Neurasthenic, to say the least. Oh, and don't forget the streamers. |
