I really like mountain biking...

Preamble: I heard from teh interwebs that some trails in my city had dried out, so I thought, "Oh hey, I should ride those..." I sent out the message to the lads and lasses that I would be at Bebo Grove by 7:00 p.m. [but to call first to confirm]. Nobody called, which was good, because I didn't get down there until 8:05. I forgot that my HT was getting the fork worked on, and that the SS was still set up for winter duty [studded tires and fenders FTW]. I had to use Liquid Wrench and an impact gun to get the frickin' freewheel off of one wheel and onto another. Then there were the tire changes, chainring swap and brake pad alignment.

The Ride: After discovering that I had no bike shorts on, and that I had forgotten to wear a jersey, I rode away from my car and down the first hill on my SS. Brakes work - bonus! Spin like a mofo [32x20 gear] and look for the right turn onto the singletrack - yep, right where I left it. Turn Up the Good - the horses haven't been through to put in the wheel-eating ruts. Turn Down the Suck - a young woman is parked in the middle of the trail, apparently angry at her boyfriend. I dodge around her and effortlessly clear some deadfall. Okay, out of the singletrack and onto the dirt trail. Peds everywhere! My POS freewheel buzzes like angry hornets in tin can and they step aside as I shout my thanks. Back on the singletrack, over every rock and root like magic, the bike working with me. At this point, I had the dirt equivalent of a "snowner" [dirtner?].

Aside: The "snowner" comes from the combination of the words snow and b*ner. It refers to the feeling one gets after carving a really huge line through 4' of untracked powder on a steep slope at high speed [see also snowgasm]. If you've never done it, you should really hit a backcountry cat or heli operation in the B.C. interior. Valhalla Powdercats is one of my favourite operations. But I digress...

The Ride [cont.]: After a while, I got to the part of the ride with all the climbing [as opposed to some of the climbing]. I hadn't been on dirt for a full 6 months, and I had new tires as well [F: Conti Vertical Pro 2.3; R: WTB Velociraptor 2.1]. I didn't know how well it would go, and I had visions of spinning out on a rooted climb, then falling backward and ripping my leg open on a gnarled stump. Surprisingly, I made it up almost every climb with aplomb. The Velociraptor hooked up really well. [Note: If your bike has no suspension, I recommend that you not run your tires at 40 psi front and back. Ow.] Eventually, the relentless pounding from rocks, roots and drops took their toll on my feeble body and I called it a night.

Aftermath: As I spun my way back to the car, I had a joyful feeling. I had swallowed many bugs, the water in my Camelback was stale [I last filled it in Oregon in October], my shoes were causing my feet to cramp, and it had been confirmed that my wife was right - I was [am] out of shape. Still, it felt so good to be out there... The obligatory stop at 7-11 for a post-ride slurpee [1/2 Sprite, 1/2 pineapple] and some gas completed the experience.

Summer is here and it's time to ride. I really love mountain biking...
