8/9-speed crankset compatibility..again

I'm sorry if this has been discussed a million times. I've searched the board (using our own utility and google) but I can't find a definitive answer (only half-assed "it should work" or "you shouldn't do that" type answers, albeit from very helpful people with the best intentions ).

The problem is that I need a new crankset/bottom bracket and I'm running an 8-speed drivetrain. I'm not interested in upgrading my shifters right now so it's going to have to stay an 8-speed drivetrain for the time being. My question is can I use 9-speed chainrings with an 8-speed chain? Alternatively, if 9-speed crankset/chainrings must have a 9-speed chain, can I use a 9-speed chain with an 8-speed cassette? Chains are cheap so if I have to buy a new 9sp. chain with a new 9sp. crankset then that's no problem.

Thanks for any advice - I know that 8/9 speed compatibility has been beaten to death.

Shimano cranksets that are designed for the Mega 9 drivetrain can also work with a 8 speed cassette. Check here for your specifics: http://bike.shimano.com/publish/cont...atibility.html
