A rattle started in my relatively new Mavic 717 XC disc front rim yesterday. I pulled off the rim strip and found a little piece of metal inside the rim by the weld joint of the rim. It is about 2mm thick and flat. It appears to be maybe some sort of additional support or brace where the rim is welded together that maybe has broken free. It slides back and forth between the welded joint and the nearest eyelet opening. It is too big to pull out of the eyelet opening.
I went to the Mavic website and could not fine a way to contact them.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Hmm...that's a new one on me. Sound's like it could be the rim pin, but I thought the 717's were welded, not pinned. Mabye they're both. I wouldn't pull it out. If it bugs you, toss a little adhesive in there to keep it "fixed" so it doesn't move around.

I just looked it up, the x717 disc is a welded / milled rim joint so I don't know. Maybe you should take a picture of what you're talking about.

(either way, I'd just adhere it and be done with it)

Thanks. There is no way that thing is coming out. Therefore, I just tapped it back where it came from with a allen wrench and a hammer, then squirted silicon in both side of it. Now the problem is I want to ride a little today and I am waiting for it to dry which could take a while.

Still an issue. It happened to me summer 2010 and Fall 2010. Colorado Cyclist says that this "sometimes happens" and that it is just annoying not a structural issue. I am going to do the silicone treatment before I go crazy with the rattle/buzz. PS: front wheel both times. Dan

Sometimes pieces of metal get stuck in the rim when the spoke holes/valve stem hole is drilled or doesn't get cut off all the way.

You can also secure it using self-expanding foam insulation, the stuff you use to seal cracks around your house windows. That stuff's crazy-sticky. Alternately, take a sharp nail and drive it through the inner rim bed, peening the metal and immobilizing that loose part.
