Snowshoe, WV - photos

The Re:cycles crew went to Snowshoe for memorial day weekend. It was sick!

I will admit my first run at snowshoe pretty much put the fear in me! If you are new to gnarly DH riding, “A” to “H” on the basin side is not the run you want take as your first run at snowshoe. The top of “A” was insanely steep and nothing like I had seen before.

I’ve been ridding aggressively for almost 2 years and the first trail “my friends” lead me down was out of my realm of skillz, for sure. I did make it, but holy crap... I was ridding a ‘07 Coiler Deluxe I had set up the night before and pretty much had no time in the saddle. Anyway my fist descent at this place made for a run I’ll never forget.

After I recovered from the shock of riding the craziest trail I’ve ever seen, I managed to find a little flow on some of the “mellower” trails.

Example of the "mellower" stuff

It took me some time to gain some confidence on the bike and how to ride the steep terrain, but I did and I had fun. Anyway more photos…

the guys I rode with

there was a nice size hip at the top of the basin side

guys enjoying the view and each others company

more trail shots

this stuff was steep!

couple of nice berms

Nice shots, highrevs! Looks like it was a fun time. Yeah, hard as you try, picts can never quite capture the steepness of some places can they?

Really liked the 'walking-(standing)on-water' shot

Thanks man! I tried my best to show a few key features that might help with showing the steepness, but overall the photos don't do it justice.

Very nice shots. What camera setup are you using? Looks like a Canon body of some variety. I'm in the market for a new digital SLR, and I'm trying to gather info from photographers along the way about their equipment... I think it's finally time to close down my darkroom and open up Photoshop...

No bear attacks, but i did see two of them. We made a beer run to the bottom of the mountain one evening and we spotted a smaller black bear running off in to the woods. He was a lot faster than i thought he would be. The other one was not fast... he was dead on the side of highway.

No Canon here. These were shot with a Nikon D70s and either a 50mm/1.8 or the 18-70mm/3.5-5.6 kit lens.

Any compliments or gripes regarding the body? If you could address one thing about it, what would you change?

My only gripe would be is that i don't have better glass to attach to the front of it. I've used a D50 and D100 and all three have worked well for me.

We used to rent a house there when Snowshoe hosted a NORBA race, and the owner would always go on & on about closing ground floor & patio accessible windows at night because of the bears.... never saw one, though!

I think it was a porter, but I honestly don’t remember.

If I do see another one, I realllly hope the conditions favor a safe viewing perspective.

Thanks Pete. Over all I was hyped on several of these. The DH stuff may have been my favorite photo part of the trip. I had concerns of not being able to show any steepness. I think I managed to pull out parts of the crazy, near vert terrain in some of the photos. I was running a little scared shooting the DH stuff though. I had fears of stirring up a rattle snake when I stepped off trail. It did not happen, but man that could have sucked.

The life style photos were a trip. Several of those made me chuckle out loud, for sure.

Robert, would you happen to have a Flickr account or other webpage as to view more of your photos? Higher resolution, etc.?

I have the XTi and am happy with it. For me it was a choice between the D40 and the XTi. I would have probably gone with the D70/80 if I was going to spend more $ on it. The Nikon grip is a bit thicker which would be better for my big paws.

My only regret was buying the kit. I should have got the body only and a separate 18-100'ish lens instead of the 18-55. Both the Canon and Nikon are better cameras than 99.9% of people would actually need.

One of the major draw backs to the D40 or D40x (in my eyes anyway) is the they don't have an internal auto focus motor. They removed the motor, from the body, to cut down on it's size. That more or less means you are stuck using a lens with a AF motor built into it, like nikkor AF-S lenses, if you want the AF option. (which means fewer lens choices with an AF option)
