I'm looking for a new bike, which should i buy?

Hello, i just joined this forum so i apologize if this is either a stupid question or a question that has been asked hundreds of time.

I want to buy a new Mountain Bike so i came here for some advice and suggestions.

I guess the first question is what brand of the MB should i buy, i had a Specialized bike which i liked, i also hear that Trek makes good bikes.

I will not be doing any hardcore mountain biking, just roads and trails that do not have any slopes or hills.

I would like to spend no more then $600

And where is the best place to buy bikes, if there's one thing that's important to me is service, i live near San Francisco so if there's a good bike store near me then please let me know.
I had good service at Nomad Cyclery in SF, Mike's Bikes in Sausalito and VERY bad service in some small bike shop in San Bruno (near lullaby lane)

That's all i can think of for now, any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm planning on a Trek 4500, but for 600 you can do the next version...

goto trekbikes.com and look at the hardtails there, or go to specialized.com and pick one you like the most...

Go to the bike shop and ride a few different brands, don't just limit yourself to a couple of brands. Gary Fisher makes good bikes too. With $600 you will have quite a few hardtails to choose from. Good Luck!
