I really want to know
I'm in the market for a new bike, and I keep thinking I have my mind made on bikes. It's either the Schwinn Mesa GSD or the Gary Fisher Wahoo. My friends keep telling me that they hate disc brakes and they aren't worth buying because they're hard to adjust and more maintenence. Give me your honest opinion please. I need to know what is involved in regular disc brake maintenence and the pros and cons of V-brakes and Disc brakes (sorry everyone :D )
Get the Wahoo, at that price range Disc brakes do indeed stink.
Well, I know that. But the schwinn has Hayes HMX-4 Disc Breaks, and from what I know Hayes makes very good brakes.
And the HMX-4 disc brakes aren't one of them, you have to pay $150-$250 per wheel to get good hayes brakes.
agreed. get the wahoo. or some avid bb5s or bb7s
The Mesa with disk brakes weighs about 37lbs, and it ain't no freeride bike. Get the wahoo.
I got the Wahoo just last week. Great bike, but admittedly, I should have spent a little more for the Specialized Rockhopper.
I was looking at the Rockhopper, but the only thing better about it is that it has the Rock Shox Dart 3 instead of the Dart 1, and it's just oil dampened and has a lockout. Other than that there isn't much different over the Wahoo. I wish the Rockhopper had the Deore stuff on it, then i'd definately save more money and get that instead.
Are you riding a 4300 now? Neither of those bikes is a huge step up.
I don't need a huge upgrade.....I really don't ride hard enough to upgrade to a better bike. I really just need a bigger bike, and both of these bikes would be great for what I do which is just riding trails etc.
Can I ask why you say Schwinn and everybody else says the gary fisher?
Well, what about the disc brakes? Everybody says they're crap.
you could get the Mesa GS, same bike but without the disc brakes. I love mine
I'm only a trail rider.......I don't need the best brakes. But I think I've made up my mind anyways, I'm gonna get the Fisher Wahoo. Maybe later I'll add a set of disc brakes and disc brake rims.
Well, unless you can convince me otherwise that's the bike i'm getting. The only incentive for the Schwinn is that the only place that sells them is a new bike shop in town and I want to help them out.....but they don't have any other good bikes other than the Mesa GSD. Of course they're going to start carrying Jamis in the next month.........:D
Naaa, I really have made my mind up. I'd rather have the better fork on the wahoo than discs on the Mesa. They both do the same job.
Sorry man. I mean, I'd take the Schwinn If you bought it for me

schwinn blows. :) get the fisher, you won't regret it. Of course if you don't need awesome disc brakes, why not just get the wahoo disc and not worry about upgrading?
