I really want to know

I'm in the market for a new bike, and I keep thinking I have my mind made on bikes. It's either the Schwinn Mesa GSD or the Gary Fisher Wahoo. My friends keep telling me that they hate disc brakes and they aren't worth buying because they're hard to adjust and more maintenence. Give me your honest opinion please. I need to know what is involved in regular disc brake maintenence and the pros and cons of V-brakes and Disc brakes (sorry everyone :D )

Dannihilator 06-11-07 07:16 PM

Get the Wahoo, at that price range Disc brakes do indeed stink.

trailridebiker 06-11-07 07:25 PM

Well, I know that. But the schwinn has Hayes HMX-4 Disc Breaks, and from what I know Hayes makes very good brakes.

Dannihilator 06-11-07 07:31 PM

And the HMX-4 disc brakes aren't one of them, you have to pay $150-$250 per wheel to get good hayes brakes.

Breitling 06-11-07 08:24 PM

agreed. get the wahoo. or some avid bb5s or bb7s

Thomas Tew 06-11-07 09:03 PM

The Mesa with disk brakes weighs about 37lbs, and it ain't no freeride bike. Get the wahoo.

patbollin 06-11-07 09:11 PM

I got the Wahoo just last week. Great bike, but admittedly, I should have spent a little more for the Specialized Rockhopper.

trailridebiker 06-12-07 04:34 AM

I was looking at the Rockhopper, but the only thing better about it is that it has the Rock Shox Dart 3 instead of the Dart 1, and it's just oil dampened and has a lockout. Other than that there isn't much different over the Wahoo. I wish the Rockhopper had the Deore stuff on it, then i'd definately save more money and get that instead.

bsyptak 06-12-07 07:20 AM

Are you riding a 4300 now? Neither of those bikes is a huge step up.

trailridebiker 06-12-07 01:04 PM

I don't need a huge upgrade.....I really don't ride hard enough to upgrade to a better bike. I really just need a bigger bike, and both of these bikes would be great for what I do which is just riding trails etc.

trailridebiker 06-13-07 09:19 AM

Can I ask why you say Schwinn and everybody else says the gary fisher?

trailridebiker 06-13-07 11:17 AM

Well, what about the disc brakes? Everybody says they're crap.

kidcharlamagne 06-13-07 11:26 AM

you could get the Mesa GS, same bike but without the disc brakes. I love mine

trailridebiker 06-13-07 12:14 PM

I'm only a trail rider.......I don't need the best brakes. But I think I've made up my mind anyways, I'm gonna get the Fisher Wahoo. Maybe later I'll add a set of disc brakes and disc brake rims.

trailridebiker 06-13-07 12:21 PM

Well, unless you can convince me otherwise that's the bike i'm getting. The only incentive for the Schwinn is that the only place that sells them is a new bike shop in town and I want to help them out.....but they don't have any other good bikes other than the Mesa GSD. Of course they're going to start carrying Jamis in the next month.........:D

trailridebiker 06-13-07 12:47 PM

Naaa, I really have made my mind up. I'd rather have the better fork on the wahoo than discs on the Mesa. They both do the same job.

trailridebiker 06-13-07 01:00 PM

Sorry man. I mean, I'd take the Schwinn If you bought it for me

Don't have a ton of experience with disc maintenance yet, but i will tell you that v-brakes are absolutely fine, for any rider, EVER so long as their not gonna get their wheels wet. if you're doing dry trails with maybe a small puddle here and there, but not alot of mud or water exposure, save the money and go v-brakes. once you get your wheel nice and wet though, kiss your stopping power goodbye with a v-brake. that's honestly the only real benefit to v brakes. I've been "told" alot of other things, but as far as i'm concerned, it's all just salesmen trying to get you to fork out 200 bucks you might not need to spend.

myidolis 06-13-07 11:51 PM

schwinn blows. :) get the fisher, you won't regret it. Of course if you don't need awesome disc brakes, why not just get the wahoo disc and not worry about upgrading?
