If you plan on doing some freeride and still love cross country riding as well, you'll love the Cannondale Prophet equipped with a Lefty Max series fork (coil with ~140mm travel) (versus the Speed series which is a air shock). This bike is so incredibly capable and so reliable. It also allows you to pull the rear bolt on the rear shock to adjust the geometry of the bike for freeride geometry, easy to do even when on the trail, great quick change when coming up to a fun, rocky downhill.

My opinion is a little biased because I absolutely LOVE Cannondale products, they are the most trouble free bikes I own. I had a Kona Coiler which was a total lemon, and my riding buddy had a Kona Stinky Dee-Lux which refused to deliver a manageable ride.

I definitely recommend the Prophet 4 or 3 depending on your price limit. Or if you want a wicked XC bike get a Cannondale RUSH!!!
