Yeah, I searched the forum and couldn't find an answer so I have to suck it up and ask.

What is the proper way to pronounce Deore?

I've been saying dee-or-ay for years and yesterday I was ordering hubs and a rear derailleur and I said dee-or-ay, the shop guy said dee-or. I then got all self conscience and avoided saying Deore either way.

I'm wrong, aren't I?

i'd say dee or my self..i'd imagine if you were italian you say dee oray, just put that in to make ye feel better!:D

I wouldn't want to sound like a [insert derogatory noun], so I say DEE-OR

I pronounce it "dee-or-ee". I'm such a rebel.

I was at the LBS and asked for a Shimano (pronounced: sa-him-an-oh) derailleur (pronounced: duh-rallayer) and they looked at me funny.

I've always said "day-or", as did everyone at the 2 shops I worked at.

I say it SRAM, thank you very much.

I'm considering switching to SRAM...at least I can say rye-vul and fors correctly. SRAM is pronounced so it rhymes with ma'am, right?

Or maybe I should give up with bikes all together, as it's too hard to pronounce the stuff. I bet I wouldn't run into this problem if I was into NASCAR.

Someone saying "day-or" rather than "dee-or" is an example of regional phonological differences (accents).

What's funny is that I'm pronouncing it the way an Italian would read it. I don't know why my brain decided that's the correct way to pronounce Deore.

I pronounce it like it is spelled. D ORE first e is silent.

I always thought of it as having Spanish origins, with the final 'e' being a syllable. But in my quick research, it turns out to be Old English in origin (dEore) and the word that the adjective dear descends from.

Whenever I see 'Deore,' I think of the Deora

The first person I ever heard pronounce it as "day-or" was my brother. We're both originally from Wisconsin. Explain that.

Well, if pronounced as a Japanese would.. it would be.

She-ma-no Day-o-day.

'Re' in Japanese, sound alot like 'day'. English doesn't really have an equivilent sound.

I think deore (de ore) in french means literally "of mineral" but the japanese translated it as "of the earth" which kinda reminds us of mountain biking. Just a guess.
