upgrading to avids + bonus question!

ok so i have decided to upgrade from shimano Vs to avid disc brakes in the front...once I install the rotor and the caliper...does anyone know how much it would cost to take it to an LBS for cable installation? Or is it easy enough to install the cables myself? Where can I get a cable kit and how do i know what size to cut the sheath? ALSO with disc brakes, will it still be safe for me to hose down my bike when its dirty?

BONUS QUESTION:

Considering I think I already know the answer...my Bottom bracket sucks...ive had to have it tightened every week...the last time I took it in, the guy took it apart and rebuilt it and now I hear a clickity flickity kinda sandy noise coming from the general crank area when pedaling...but I wouldnt go as far as call it a grinding sound...I'm waiting on a new BB to come into the shop for replacement...but is it possible something else could be causing the clickity flickity from my crank area?

make sure your pedals are on tight, and your crank bolts are tight.

Stand and pedal then sit and pedal. If it only makes the noise when seated, chances are good that it's the seatpost. If the noise is made in both situations, it's more likely drivetrain related.

clickety flickety? Well i have no idea what your bikes problem is, but your description probably contains the most onomatopoeia i've seen in awhile.

in reference to having a local lbs do it for you? it varies by location, but i'd imagine that so long as you supply all the needed parts, it shouldn't run you too much. One of the techs at mine (jax in fullerton) says he can do that upgrade in less than fifteen minutes, provided everything is ready to go...he may have been exaggerating though. Anyways, average upgrade fee's are usually less than 50 bucks there. So if you don't wanna risk doing it wrong, it's not TOO much to have it done right.

well it makes it while standing and while sitting down...but im still confused as to why the seatpost would cause this...would it mean my seatpost is too loose/tight? or something wrong with my frames seat tube?

I found out what the main culprit of the noise is though for those of you interested...it was the lube i was using...it was too thin and when the excess dried or fell off it was the actual sound of the chain hitting the sprockets that was giving me that sound...i need a thicker grade lube i guess..i was using ice wax.....SO after a 2nd helping of lube on the bike it stopped making that noise..

FYI, the noise a seatpost makes can sound like it's coming from the BB.

in the front the cable goes pretty much from the brake caliper to the lever in the sheath, leave a slight bend so theres no sharp angles.

the bike store will tell you to use only cable cutters...but you can cut it with just about anything made to cut wire or cable...or even a hacksaw. I cut mine with snapon lineman pliers. just make sure you stick something in the end of the housing to open it back up again after you cut it...sometimes it crimps shut. I used the cutters they have at my lbs the first time and they crimped it shut also...

As an interesting fact, at the shop I work at we are told to run front brake cables to the inside of the fork leg, and zip tie the cable to the fork bridge and if the cable is sticking out too much, another zip tie can be used to ziptie the cable to the leg of the fork. The idea is to prevent snagging of the cable on brush you ride by on the trail.

My mechanic buddy installed my new Reba the on the inside of the leg. Now I know why. I love my Reba.

Funny, I'm changing from Avid to Hayes Mags with Titanium Bolt kit and Carbon Levers.
