A little help disecting some info.....

I'm a complete noob to Mountain Biking and honestly it won't be till next spring I'm getting into it more as I'm rehabbing a knee and dropping weight.

I'm completely lost trying to decipher the multitudes of info out there......

I bought a used Gary Fisher Tassajara with these components - could you guys tell me whats good/decent or junk?

Not looking to upgrade now but to get some info on what I have and work on it over this winter in VT.

Front Suspension: RS Jett
Front Rim: Weinmann 519
Rear Rim: Weinmann Double Walled Zach 19
Crank Arms say: Shimano Acera
Rear Derailer says: Shimano Deore X
Tires: WTB Primal Raptors 47/54
Handle Bar: 6061 t6 Aluminum 230grams
Sadle: Contour CRZ Plus

I'd like to get into Novice level MTN Biking over the next couple seasons and will not be buying a new bike. Thoughts? Insight? Links?

Thanks guys!

Front Suspension: RS Jett - decent entry level fork, should be fine for light riding
Front Rim: Weinmann 519 - is the front double-walled too? if so it ought to be decent for light/medium terrain
Rear Rim: Weinmann Double Walled Zach 19 - not bad
Crank Arms say: Shimano Acera - decent front der
Rear Derailer says: Shimano Deore X - are you sure it doesn't say "Deore XT"? either way, decent R. Der.
Tires: WTB Primal Raptors 47/54 - tire preference is mostly personal opinion, these are ok i think.
Handle Bar: 6061 t6 Aluminum 230grams - pretty standard methinks
Sadle: Contour CRZ Plus - if it's comfortable and the rails don't fail on you, it's a good saddle. I'm 200lbs so i've had problems ruining saddle rails hehe.

I'd like to get into Novice level MTN Biking over the next couple seasons and will not be buying a new bike. Thoughts? Insight? Links? -- The bike has a good frame and decent components so just ride and have fun. What I do is I secretly want to upgrade but can't really afford it. So I wait till something breaks or wears out and I replace it with good stuff. My pedals wore out and I got Kona Jacks**t's, always wanted them. my Deore drivetrain is starting to wear down so i'm looking at XT/XTR/X.0 stuff :D

Bicycling works well for knee rehab.

Your bike is a pretty good mid-level mountain bike. Ride it as is and save for something better as you get better. Generally, a $600 to $800 bike is good to ride and good to learn skills on. It's not the best platform to spend a lot of money on for upgrades. If you spend another $600 on upgrades (which is easier to do than you might think:eek: ), you still have a $600 bike that cost you $1200.

Ride it, have fun with it, don't get too attached - it's just a bike - and go drool on something higher up the food chain.

Thanks for the reply guys. I appreciate it.

I will never get into highly competative mountain biking......but I will get into novice racing and treat it competatively.

I was just curious about what I have in terms of equipment on the bike....in terms of upgrades I was considering at some point the front suspension and rims to switch over to disc brakes?

Perhaps more depending upon whats on clearance/christmas presents etc.....

As to buying a new bike? I'll pass until I break this frame. I'm not all that worried about sinking money into the bike as I purchased it just north of $100 used. I'm obviously not going to put the very top rated items on it but don't mind putting some cash into it.

The front rim doesn't have the markings on it saying it's double walled? Is there a way I can check myself to see easily?
