XC race wheel suggestions
I am looking for some decent light weight wheels for xc racing. The key here is that they need to be for v-brakes, and I don't want to spend a ton. Primarily because I figure this will probably be my last season racing without discs. Oh well, I have been hoping to find a used set of dt swiss 240s or something, but am not coming up with anything. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Crossmax SL's for $550, minus 10% you can always get at Nashbar with one of their coupons. Light, UST, look ace, I want them. They did have them for a hundred dollars less a month or so ago, keep an eye on them, they might go cheaper again.

The biggest concern is budget here.
If you are into 240s quality stuff already, crossrides is probably not your grade. You can get Crossmax SL 06. They are half the price of the Crossmax SLR 07 in Toronto. $1200 vs. $650!
For a wheelset, I will take Crossmax SL. I will not take Cane Creek and Spinergy due to lots of service problems.
For custom, some hubs are 240s or Chris King. Or if you really want buttery smooth, get DT 190! Those are the best. DT is better for racing due to its weight but Chris King and Hope will last you way longer. American Classic is also good for racing. Personally I still like Hope and Chris King as I have both and the 4 bearings system on rear is much better then the two on DT. But there is more weight but only very little.
As for rims, ZTR 355 at 375-385g will be a good choice.

Thanks for the input. I might go with the crossmax sl's but would love to get something custom built. I am just getting really furious with the xt hubs on my current xc wheels.

www.oddsandendos.com has the DT's or the Velocity's around 1500g for under $400 for a set. You can also have them built the way you want.

If you want the lightest, get Stan's Olympic ZTR wheelset (maybe there are lighter ones if im not mistaken), a cheaper option then Mavic is FSA XC-300 wheelset.

I am pretty sure ZTR 355 is the lightest you can get with rims. FSA XC is for sure a cheap one but more weight. Over 4 lbs
