Goin Retro!!! (Complete with PICS)

Finally got this thing done. Now I just need to get out to the trail and test it out. I rode it around the neighborhood, and the group works fine. I get a bit of chain rub on the inside of the Front Der when in the granny gear. The der won't move in far enough to prevent it, so there's nothing that can be done. The limitter is all the way in. Ah well. Just something I have to live with. All other gears work great. I doubt I'll use the 20-32t much anyway, as I plan on mainly intermediate CX trail riding, and nothing too extreme.

Anyway, here's a series of pics, and a list of everything.

Bicycle- 2000-2001 Specialized Rockhopper Comp.

Frame- Aluminum Rockhopper Hardtail.

Forks- Manitou Spyder R

Headset- Stock Specialized 1-1/8" . Repainted gloss black.

Wheelset- Ritchey Rock Comp rims w/Specialized hubs.

Tires- Panaracer Smoke rear, Dart Classic front.

Stem/Bars/Seatpost- Kalloy UNO purple anodized.

Grips- OURY green.

Groupset- Shimano Deore LX M580 w/low normal dual control shifters.

Brakes- Stock Dia-Comps.

Brake Boosters- Piranha Racing purple anodized.

Crankset- Stock crankarms w/XT outer, Race Face middle, stock inner rings.

Pedals- Shimano M520.

Cassette- SRAM PG-980 11-32t.

Chain- IRD 990 Pro.

Saddle- E3 Gel.

Bottle cage- MT Zefal purple anodized.

Various anodized nuts and bolts-

Odyssey Ti binder.
Purple Chainring and M8 crankbolts.

Total Weight- I'm guessing around 23-24lbs.

It's nowhere near as heavy as my 28# commuter, but much heavier than my 17# roadie. Adding all of the upgraded components dropped a good 1-2lbs off the whole bike. That I know for sure, because I weighed all the parts to compare to the old stuff.

Total cost-

The bike was originally given to me for free. My friend bought it at a garage sale for $3, and it was too big for him. He also didn't want to spend alot of money to get it working again. He figured it wasn't worth it, as it was pretty trashed. So, he gave it to me, because the frame is my size.

To paint and upgrade- ~$500 for everything, including paint job, new Answer Palisade shoes, and pedals.

Ouch! Ouch! Where's the volume control?! Nice work, Patriot. It's been fun seeing it come together (even if I can't look for too long at a time).

What's with the stray sun-break in the last shot?

Wow! I love the details. She is real purdy and well thought out. Did you paint this one yourself?

BTW - this I believe, is my first post in the MTB Forum.

Do you think you could add a few more pics? I don't think I know what kind of chain you're running.

Looks good. You've inspired me to find a $3 frame and figure out what I can do from there.

Ok, when I saw pics of the frame painted I wasn't so sure...but now that I see it all built up with decals and everything it's great!!! Good job on that one, what a throwback.

I submit this for sweetest home retro job ever. I'm having serious flashbacks right now. Big old toe clips and friction shifters would have made that absolutely perfect.
How did you do all the lettering? That is awesome.

No, you'll definitely be shot at. But that is one sweet ride.

I'm not sure you have enough purple on there though.

Originally, I thought about some retro purple platforms and thumbies. However, I really wanted to try out the Low Normal Dual Control system. I'm also used ot using clipless now, and wanted to try either SPD's or Eggbeaters. I decided on SPD's for two reasons.

1. The M520's were cheaper.
2. For an inexpensive pedal, they have great reviews.

So, I had to compromise. I went with a newer group, with lots of retro parts to accent the paint job. I had it all in my mind, and toyed with drawings on my computer to get a basic idea of what it would all look like. Even then, I still had my doubts it would look as nice as it does.

All in all, I think it turned out pretty good. I'm a happy dude.
