Still kicking.
In this case, spd's. Have nothiing but dislike for crank bros. If frogs were up there I would say frogs.

I have used both SPD's and Egg Beaters and i must say, they're both great pedals. I never had a problem with either of them in the mud. I prefer the egg beaters solely because i like the release much more.

I like the egg beaters. The spring tension works just fine for me, and the 4 sided entry is nice. Not to mention i have never had a problem in winter riding with them, never had any huge issues with spd in the winter, but not as 100% consistant. I live where there is red clay and it packs around cleats really hard, so sometimes the crankbro's just cut through it better.

I rode SPD's for a while and really liked them... better than my Time's. However, within 3 minutes of riding Eggbeaters, I knew which pedal I would run for many years to come. Eggbeaters hands down in my opinion.

hm. i have eggbeaters right now, and it takes just a while to get the clipin nice and crisp the first time. for some reason i find it a bit more difficult to clip-in cleanly with the eggies than the spds. it might just be that it takes some time, but eventually it will be clean.
as for the spds, i kinda like them better just because they have a more distinct "click-in" sound. in addition, the click-in is almost foolproof. its difficult to miss the pedal, kinda as though it guides you straight into the pedal. in my opinion, i'd go for a nice pair of spds, but i just don't wanna have to make the change over from pedals and cleats.
damn you crankbros cleats, won't work on any other pedal!

Im in the market for new pedals.
Its a tough choice, because my stepdads bike has SPD's, but i reaaaaally want EggBeater C's, and i wouldnt be able to ride his bike with my EB shoes. Shame. But i think ill end up with the eggbeaters.

If you have any problems with your SPDs, you'll need a strong LBS in your corner to help you deal with Shimano. Seen it happen several times with some guys I ride with.
With Crank Bros. you can call up or email the company directly and get well taken care of. I had a rebuild kit sent to me for free after calling them inquiring about buying an end cap I had lost. I know others who have had great experience dealing with them as well.

What exactly is your experience with SPD pedals in mud?

Maybe you just haven't experienced the right kind of mud yet.
After listening to all that cursing, it would be kinda stupid for me to spend money on SPDs.

Friend, why don't you take up your argument with the people RIGHT HERE IN THIS THREAD who say that have problem with SPDs and mud. That and take it up with all the people complaining of mud clogging below:
https://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Pedal/product_87863.shtml
https://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Pedal/product_22420.shtml
https://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Pedal/product_122793.shtml
Every time this comes up people complain about SPDs clogging in the mud. No doubt some SPD models are better then others. If you have some guidance for people on this, please feel free to share it. I will point out that Egg Beaters (that are "clipless") all have EXACTLY the same clip mechanism so one can recommend Egg Beaters for mud clearance and be confident that they won't buy the "wrong" model.

I started on SPD's, moved on to Eggs after awhile. I wanted to love them. The 4 sided entry, the lighter weight, etc. Fact is (for me) they don't allow me out as easily as SPD's in the technical sections. I took more slow speed falls that I could not for the life of me get out of the pedal. After bashing my knees on rocks a few times in a month, I went back to SPD's. I never have any entry/exit issues with them even when muddy and I can always get out of them even with most of my weight on the pedal I'm trying to get out of, that's the one thing I couldn't do in Eggs.

Geez, some really nice guys in here! I love the bitterness and nastiness that boils to the surface so quickly from behind the veil of internet anonymity.
To the OP, a quick look at mtbr.com and here shows you that there are enough people that love both platforms that there's going to be no easy answer here. It's going to boil down to personal preference every time. You're just gonna have to try them both, or just pick one and go with it, knowing that you can't go too far wrong either way.
