truing wheels? (wheel problems)
When truing a wheel does it become weaker than it was before?
I bent my single track sun rim a week after I got my bike, from going off a 5 foot drop and landing not so great (it was still a sloped landing though) . It was just bad enough that I couldn’t ride it home. It took a week for the shop to get the time to true it, then when i got it back I went to the bike park twice and then bent it again, and I don’t even know how. I was just going off jumps and 2 footer drops and I didn’t notice until I got to pavement that I had a wobble in my back tire and some of my spokes were really loose.
I am getting really frustrated because I have taken my 1997 bmx off 3 and 4 footers and I do the same with my banshee morphine and I seem to bend a rim. I am just wondering if every time they fix my rim its just going to get weaker? I am going to upgrade my wheel but I am not sure what I should get yet. Or maybe its a messed hub or something? Any thoughts?

First, a 20" bmx wheel has much greater lateral strength than a 26" mountain bike wheel, due to the size.
Second, the wheel was probably not tensioned correctly to begin with, and the shop rat at your lbs probably made it worse.
I would learn how to true and tension wheels yourself if you plan to continue riding that way. Its possible that you may need the toughest wheelset available due to your riding style.

If the rim itself is actually bent, then the "trued" wheel will have some internal stress, which can weaken it.

Where would a person look to learn how to properly true a wheel? Does it take much skill or can anyone do it?

i asked for something bombproof for a budget of just over a hundred quid, i got the above for £145, i had budget constraints so i doubt that's even close your requirements.. tho i reckon it'll be pretty solid, will soon find out, hope it last better than my last wheel! (4 months)

depends on cost of spokes, hubs, and the labor of your friendly local bicycle shop to lace/true your wheel set. do you want cheap spokes? or the most advanced spokes? existing dirty hubs? or killer new shiny hubs?
...and then you would basically need to call the shop and ask them what they charge to build the wheels.
