Need Upgrade Ideas for My Iron Horse Maverick 4.2
I just got a Iron Horse Maverick 4.2 and I really want to upgrade some parts like the fork and the rear spring with Air powered one but I don't know which ones are good. The front fork I have is a Rox Shox Dart 1 and I want to keep is Rox Shox but I want something better and that is air powered. The rear suspension is fox something but I want to put an air powered one that is a rox shox. Other than that I have no idea what parts are good and what parts are not. I have a shimano acera derailleur , and MX4 Hayes disc brakes(i don't know if they are good but if you have any suggestions) I also have a shimano shifter. Please tell me any suggestions you have. I am planing to drive it off road for about a year and then I'm thinking about riding it from Europe to India so I need the shocks to be soft for off road and hard for on road. I'm have about 4 sets of different tires and I have a special set with rims that I am going to use to go to India. I am also moving to Bulgaria so I wont be able to buy anything else after I move(everything there is about 3 times more expensive).

If I were you, I'd keep the fox rear and get a fox up front. But that might be overkill for that bike.
Nothing wrong with Rock shox but, why are you dead set against anything else even though you say you don't know what's good and what's not? Buy respected brand suspension part that's good for the bike, suits your riding style, and budget. Not just because it says 'rock shox".
And quite frankly, you probably just should have bought a better bike to begin with if you want to upgrade. You are upgrading the most expensive parts you possibly can on a bike. It would have been FAR more cost effective to buy a bike with the level of fork you require already on it.

I got the bike from dicks for around $200, i had a 20% off and the manager gave me a 10% off because the tires were different(they come like that) and I bought a gift card from ebay for 220 that was $350. So the bike came out cheap. Are fox better than rox shox? I will also sell the rox shox for around $250 in Bulgaria and I really want air powered so I can change the pressure. Thanks Ivan

I really love the frame, I think it is the greatest frame and the greatest color. But I am a newbie biker so??? (Sorry for the many posts).

Change the fork to a R.S. Reba race and the rear shock to a R.S. MC3.3. Change all your components to Sram carbon XO and your brakes to Avid juicy 7. That shoud get you started.

Fork. Yea... why not? I haven't looked at the Boxxer. The reba I bought looks great(from the pics). Do they also sell shocks? I think im gona buy a fox rear shock but air powered.

Ok buddy.....i was being sarcastic, sorry if you got the wrong impression. Boxxers are rather impressive, extreme downhill forks, dual crowns. Rather expensive too. Seriously though, let us know how the Reba pans out, hey?
Boxxers and reba's are RockShox. Im not sure is they *sell* shocks, but i know they come OE on alot of bikes.

I really don't want downhill because i need something more "all around" and I think the reba will do great considering it is a very expensive shock. I have around 200 more to spend on the bike. I think that the brakes will do fine sense I don't want the best (and I have had worse). I have been working alot for this bike . By the way I got the Reba used so it came out to around $200. Thanks for the idea w/the white cables.

I also have another question... around how long do the pads and rotors last on a bike? I have also been getting mine hot, and I was wondering if that is bad or what kind of effect it has on the breaks. Thanks Ivan

Ditch the Acera derailleurs and get some Shimano LX components. Start with the rear derailleur.

What is the difference between derailleurs ? Is there an actual difference or is it just the weight and other small imperfections. Thanks Ivan

it's mainly just shifting speed/smoothness, durability, and reliability. the general rule is get at least a deore or a sram x-5 and you'll be fine. up from there it's mostly weight and stuff. i've got friends who love alivio and one who even runs all acera on his bike. neither of them have ever had any problems.
