Croaking from the front end?

My bike is making this strange croaking, ribbit, froggy sound in the front when the brakes are on. Any suggestions as to what's going on?

HFX-9 brakes, Specialized Stout hub.

I think they are hungry for gr@sshoppers.

Hard to diagnose with the info you've given. Is it a steady sound w/ brakes on or intermitent? Is it coming from the brakes, hub, or further up around the steerer tube? Go push and pull laterally on the top of your front wheel to make sure the hub isn't loose.

Have you recently spilled something on the pads? Oil perhaps?

Sorry, I should have made it more clear. Only happens when I'm braking in the front. I've got hydro brakes. The noise sounds like it's coming from the headset/stem though.

I don't think I've gotten anything on the disks, and there doesn't seem to be any reduction in braking force.

The noise sounds like spring peepers (type of frog). It seems cyclic, but is too slow to be cyclic w/wheels.

How much lateral play is ok in the hub?
