Tune Up/Repair Costs

Hey everyone, I have a question.

I really don't have much knowledge regarding present mountain bikes, as I'm into road cycling.

Anyways, a friend of mine has a mountain bike... the bike definetly needs a tune up, but it also needs some repairs. One of the cables has snapped or been cut.

I was just wondering what a reasonable price is for a tune up + repair of one of the cables? Or just for a tune up?

Also, if anyone is from the Toronto (GTA), can you recommend any good/shops w/reasonable prices to get the tune up and said repairs done?

Thanks very much!

Cables cost about $3 which is cheap. Make sure you get the right one, either Brake, or Dérailleur cable.

Tell him to fix it himself. The money spent on materials and tools is much cheaper than what most shops charge for labor, and in the end you have a greater knowledge about your bike. Refer him to these sites if he has trouble.

I'm thinking labor is around $60 per hour...generally speaking

Thanks guys.

I told him to try fixing it himself, but he says he'd rather take it to a shop because it needs a tune up anyways.

What's a reasonable price for a tune up? So my buddy doesn't get ripped off!

It depends on exactly what will be done to the bike when calling it a "tune up." That's very non descript language. Either way, as has been mentioned, anything done during a "tune up" can be done at home, and typically without a lot of specialized tools (save maybe for a chain breaker).

The only thing much different between mountain bike maintenance and road bike maintenance is suspension and brakes.
