8 speed chain with 9 speed derailleur

I recently upgraded my rear derailleur from a shimano alivio to a shimano XT M761. The alivio was an 8 speed derailleur, and even though i am still gonna be using only an 8 speed cassette, because the XT is a mega 9 speed SGS derailleur, will I need to upgrade to a 9 speed chain as well? It may be just an opticle illusion but the cage on the xt looks longer than the cage on the alivio but both are rated "long cage".

The derailer don't care. It's just a robot that does what the shifter tells it to do. Keep the 8 speed chain and cassette.

another question about cog/chain stretching...as this is a new crankset ive got...im worried about chain skippage as the chain and cogs behind it are older...there is just over 100 miles on my rear cog and chain (both shimano hyperglide)...is 100 miles enough to have streched those out to where ill have problems with a new crankset?

You should check the width of the chains, which is what the issue is. 10 speed chains especially are a narrower gauge than 8 and 9 speed chains. Between 8 and 9 speed there shouldn't be much difference, but if there is, ie if the 8 speed chain is a lot thicker than t'other, you'll get serious wear issues on your drive train and constant ghosting.

Well, I'm sure he'll be okay then.

My apologies, it's nearly 5am here, didn't read the initial post right.
